John Reid

Just read on text there that John Reid the Scottish MP who was Home Secretary up until last week has been offered the position of Celtic Chairman by Dermot Desmond. Brian Quinn is set for retirement apparently. I have read before that he was a Celtic fan but I have always disliked him greatly as a politician. He was Home Secretary up until last week and was all over the TV last year around the alleged terrorist plot in London. His time as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland wasn’t succesful and he voted for the war in Iraq. He is on the right of the Labour Party which would do nothing to make him popular with a lot of Celtic fans.

I wouldn’t be pleased with that appointment at all. Having said that the Chairman is a figurehead role but it should certainly not be somebody like Reid. It shouldn’t be a politican at all.

I have no time whatsoever for John Reid either.

Never had much time for John Reid myself but I can’t really say he was “unsuccessful” as Northern Ireland secretary. Peter Hain and the British government only got the Northern Irish assembely going again by threathening Northern Irish Citizens with water charges. The citizens fought back by demanding their elected representatives to enforce power sharing to block the water charges. The assembly was overdue for a long time, the water charges trick was the cataylist. John Reid worked a lot harder on the North then Peter Hain, and it will be intresting to see how he copes in a sports position.

How do you know Reid worked a lot harder than Hain? I never said Hain did a good job in the first place. I would say he was unsuccesful as from memory I can’t remember any real progress been made when he was Northern Ireland secretary. I thought he did poor as Home Secretary also.
I also think it is a bit step to say that water charges were the cataylist for the resumption of the Assembly also. It is hardly as if the four main parties would suffer because the assembly wasn’t back up and running and water charges were brought in.
