Kilkenny have pulled out of the Walsh Cup as a mark of respect to Johnny Ryan, father of current All-Ireland winning captain Lester, who died in a farmyard accident this morning.
Johnny Ryan, who was in his early 60s, died after a tractor rolled back on him. His son Lester was at the farm at the time.
Johnny Ryan captained the over-40s Kilkenny side to All-Ireland glory a number of years ago and was well-known in Kilkenny hurling circles. He won a Kilkenny county title in 1986 with Clara.
The Cats were scheduled to play against NUI Galway on Friday and meet Carlow on Sunday. Carlow will now play NUI Galway in a play-off in Fenagh on Friday at 7pm.
Kilkenny will open the 2015 National League against Cork on 14 February at Pairc Uí Rinn.
Lester Ryan led Kilkenny to their 35th All-Ireland title last September, with the Cats defeating Tipperary in a classic replay at Croke Park.

Ah fuck that, I remember marking him in a junior game a long time ago. He must have been well over 40 at that stage and I didn’t get a look in

That’s awful news. RIP

They’ve had a fair few tragedy’s in Clara over the years. I remember back in 1986, the day they won the County Championship for the first time, Dick Cassin one of the selectors dropped dead from a heart-attack in the dressing room after the match. A day or two later, John Knox, the club chairman was knocked down by a car and killed.

Terrible news. RIP.

The Specials?

Probably

I played against him in special junior anyway. The man didn’t spare timber and was fit as a fiddle well into his 40s. Seemingly he was the most mental of the Ryan brothers which was some feat. RIP

That is dreadful.

Sad news.

I’d posted this clip before, but it feels appropriate to post it again - Johnny Ryan playing a crucial role in Clara’s match winning goal in the 1986 Kilkenny County Final.

He was. He wasn’t called Johnny ‘break your hands’ Ryan for nothing.
Terrible news. RIP.

Thats very sad, Rip

Henry Shefflin has decided to put off any decision on whether to make any further pointless, demeaning cameo appearances for Kilkenny this year until September*.

*After the the All-Ireland club final, so it could be September.
