Surely round 1 would be a good place to start it?

Huge bidding war for the rights

He’s good in fairness.

Last year in the county final he was picked up by whichever position he drifted into. And it worked well for NaP. Tonight he was making hay on Foley unfortunately in the first half.

In the second half at the throw in I saw him camped on the edge of the square beside Casey. He seemed to stay there. After that I don’t know.

It’d be interesting to see what he scored from play in the first half compared to the second half.

Lynch was quiet. I couldn’t give you a motm. We couldn’t win a puckout in the first half for love nor money. We changed it around a bit in the second half and things improved.

0-2 first half and a total of zero after the restart from play

He must have been injured.

NICK GRENE SPORTSGROUND INTERMEDIATE HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP GROUP 1, ROUND 1

Murroe/Boher 3-19 Croagh/Kilfinny 0-23

On a dry yet breezy Friday evening at Fedamore’s Boolavoord grounds, Murroe/Boher and Croagh/Kilfinny played out an entertaining game of hurling in the ‘Seamus Hickey Derby’. A free by CK’s Cian O’Carroll opened the scoring in the second minute before points by Aaron Kennedy (free) and Mikey Ryan established an early lead for Murroe who were assisted by a moderate breeze in the first half. CK spurned a goal chance in the sixth minute when full forward and ex Limerick footballer Seamus O’Carroll decided to square the ball to Seamus Hickey when through on goal, only to see MB custodian Killian Quaid smother Hickey’s shot.

The opening stages were tit for tat with CK leading 07-05 with 12 minutes on the clock, Cian Carroll and Seamus O’Carroll with the pick of Croagh’s scores from play. Two Murroe goals inside the next 12 minutes changed the complexion of the game however. Full forward Jack Casey was having a serious impact for MB with his ability to win clean possession, and following a fine catch on 12 minutes, he evaded his marker Eoin Barry to smash past Cian Sheehy in the CK goals. A second MB goal arrived in the 22nd minute – corner forward Mikey Ryan finishing off an opportunistic chance after Aaron Kennedy’s free had rebounded back off the post. That left it at 2-8 to 0-9. Indeed it could have been even worse for CK had Cian Sheehy not saved well from a low Mikey Ryan effort on goal on 27 minutes.
Murroe‘s half back line had been on top for the majority of that half, with Darragh Kennedy at 5 and Oisin Holmes at 7 doing particularly well, ensuring a good supply of ball to their inside line. Centre back Finn Hourigan contributed a monster point, while having a right battle royale with Croagh’s James Lanigan. Croagh were not getting much change out of Murroe’s full back line, as their main scoring threat Cian O’Carroll was deployed further out on the 40’ to get on the ball – O’Carroll finished the half with 0-8 (0-6 frees). Meanwhile Murroe’s Aaron Kennedy notched 0-5 (0-3 frees) in the opening half.
Last year’s runners up Croagh however finished that opening period strong however, scoring three out of the last four points of the half - James Lanigan and Cian O’Carroll 2 (0-1 free) ensuring the Westerners went to the dressing rooms just three behind at the break (2-9 to 0-12), having played against a not insignificant breeze.

Croagh dominated the opening twenty minutes of the second half, outscoring Murroe by 0-9 to 0-2. Aided by the breeze, their defence grew into the game, and midfielders Barry Lenihan and Adam Shanagher gained the ascendancy over Murroe’s Mark Nicholas and Ross Kennedy. Aidan O’Shea had replaced Eoin Barry for Croagh at full back after 22 minutes of the first half, and had immediately got to grips with Jack Casey’s threat. Two Barry Lenihan points, and one each from Bryan Flynn, Tom McMahon, Jack Lenihan, and Seamus O’Carroll allied to four Cian O’Carroll frees, saw Croagh lead by 0-22 to 2-12 by the 53rd minute. Croagh will rue two missed goal opportunities during this purple patch, Brian Hannan’s electing to raise the ball when pulling on it would have been the better option, with the aftermath finishing in a Bryan Flynn point. Then on 45 minutes, Seamus O’Carroll blazed wide with the goal at his mercy having collected well following a long delivery.

With a mini shock looking on, and all the momentum with men from the west, Murroe decided to play their ace card, and sprung Seanie Tobin from the bench on 50 minutes. His impact was immediate as he won and converted a close range free on 53 minutes. He would also contribute two points from play as the Croagh defence struggled to contain his pace and power. Both Ryans down the left side of Murroe’s attack now got a second wind, with both being fouled, along with David Hickey. Aaron Kennedy nailed all but one of these frees, to leave the game level at 0-22 to 2-16 with time almost up. A further Kennedy free saw Murroe assume the lead on 60 minutes. Then, a long delivery in, saw Jack Casey ghost in behind the hitherto outstanding Aidan O’Shea, to claim the ball and flick it past the on-rushing Cian Sheehy to the back of the net, to give Murroe a four point lead, 3-17 to 0-22. The game had totally turned inside seven minutes, the introduction of Tobin being the catalyst for Murroe’s new found energy. Kennedy scored Murroe’s final point from a free, with Cian O’Carroll pointing from play for Croagh. Following five minutes of injury time, ref Paddy Lyons blew for full time, with Murroe winning out by five, 3-19 to 0-23.

Murroe/Boher were full value for their win, even though Croagh/Kilfinny will see it as an opportunity lost, especially given that they were four points up with seven minutes of normal time remaining. James Butler’s team played a cuter brand of hurling, and just found their men that little bit easier, In Jack Casey, Mikey Ryan and David Hickey, they had a constant goal threat, particularly Casey.

Croagh just don’t have the same ability to get goals, it has been and will continue to be their Achilles heel until they address it. Shorn of the services of Josh O’Connor (midfield) and Dave Lynch (goalkeeper), nonetheless, they did have some fine performances from Aidan O’Shea, Conor Lenihan, Barry Lenihan, James Lanigan and Cian O’Carroll. They are still a young side (average age of 24), so one can only expect them to improve in the next few seasons.

Murroe by contrast are a more seasoned team and used all their experience to pull this one out of the fire. Aaron Kennedy was almost flawless from frees and hit two points from play. Both Mikey and Michael Ryan gave Croagh plenty of problems with their runs. Jack Casey, although on fire early on, then went out of the game as Aidan O’Shea quelled his threat. Casey had the last laugh however as he struck for his second and Murroe’s crucial third goal in injury time to seal the Eastern side’s win.

Murroe will be happy to get over what should be their toughest test in the group, but face another upcoming young team in Mungret next Sunday. One would still fancy Murroe to come out on top. Croagh/Kilfinny will now hope to attain for tonight’s loss by taking care of St Kierans next Friday. Still a lot of hurling to be played but even at this early stage, Murroe Boher look near certs to be at the business end of the championships, with Croagh not far behind them.

SCORERS FOR MURROE/BOHER: Aaron Kennedy 0-10 (0-8 frees), Jack Casey 2-0, Mikey Ryan 1-2, Seanie Tobin 0-3 (0-1 free), Jack Nicholas, Michael Ryan & David Hickey 0-1 each.

SCORERS FOR CROAGH/KILFINNY: Cian O’Carroll 0-12 (0-9 frees), Seamus O’Carroll, James Lanigan & Barry Lenihan 0-2 each, Jack Lenihan, Brian Hannan, Andrew Meade, Bryan Flynn, & Tom McMahon 0-1 each.

STAR MAN: Mikey Ryan (13) Murroe/Boher

WIDE COUNT: Murroe/Boher 11, Croagh/Kilfinny 8

That’s a great report pal

Sounds like another good game. Could very well see those two teams face off again later in the year.

A fair result given the players missing so. Would I be right in saying Downes, Nash, Staff, O’Connells x 2, Tony McCarthy all missimg from last year starting team?

They’ll have to give up that football

We were missing 7 of last year’s starting team but Staff did actually start (not Garry Sheehan). He was just wearing a different jersey because the jersey he was supposed to be wearing was brought to the Championship launch and not brough to the match :grinning:

Tony McCarthy, Peter Nash, Cathal Downes, Barry O’Connell, Darren O’Connell, Conor McMahon & Niall Rushe all started the first Championship match of 2023 and only DOC was theoretically available to start yesterday.

Big players in fairness but we have added Rob O’Farrell, Seán Kavanagh, James Mason, Lorcan O’Leary & James Pomeroy who weren’t available last year for various reasons, so it’s not all a sob story.

That’s a hell of a result while missing all those players. Well done.

Not a great look for Louis Mulqueen. Walkovers for the league and then a trimming 1st match out

Spike has now decided he doesn’t want the hassle of streaming. Unless the public kick up a fuss there will be no games streamed…

I’ll tip for Claughaun later for the double-header. St. Patrick’s v Old Christians at 5, followed by Ahane v Mungret at 7.
