He brought some Box Office Appeal to the West Tipp SFC during his time in charge of Aherlow. There must have been a few thousand at the Final between Aherlow and Bansha under lights in Cappawhite in 2009.(A West final today might get 100 people to attend).
A late Aherlow goal won it leading a full scale brawl involving Players, Mentors and Spectators. Paddy Russell was the official and just let them at it.

Honestly re gillane, itās about time somebody took a stand on it. Thereās a heap of counties would do exactly the same, but the same counties would remove them quickly if they werenāt essential. Cantona-esque. Iām not at all pointing a finger at Limerick, weāve had our own problems in years gone by and done the same, but whilst these lads donāt ask to be role models, thatās exactly what they are, and this was beyond normal brawling which weāre pretty much all guilty of. Anyhow.

Thereās many examples of such behaviour across all walks of life that had the involved been a fringe element, theyād be gone.
