If this Martinez malarkey happens then were in for a good scrap at the wrong end of the league this season. His team at Wigan wasn’t much worse then Liverpools and he struggled with them.
Martinez :o :o
Whelan has stated that Liverpool have asked permission to talk to him (Martinez)- Who the fuck is advising these cunts? It is all a clever decoy, it has to be.
I fucking love that man.
Martinez. FFS.
You’ll love the other rumour doing the rounds so Sidney. Kenny told them to keep his severance money and spend it on players!
Kenny Dalglish always puts Liverpool Football Club first.
Surely other people will be interviewed besides Martinez? Hopefully it’s just an FAI/Paul Jewell-style kite being flown.
TFK EXCLUSIVE!
Rumours that AVB has also got a phonecall though so hopefully Martinez is just on a list and not the main target. There’ll be uproar if he’s brought in. UPROAR!
Who is Roberto Martinez?
This whole episode has been a shining example to other clubs on how they should conduct their affairs, none of the acrimonious squabbling you see from the likes of Chelsea & Man U. Liverpool FC knows how to treat it’s legends, and vice versa.
One of the things I heard this morning was that the owners want the new manager to in place for “at least four or five years”. But by sacking Kenny Dalglish they have set a precedent. Immediate qualification for the Champions’ League at the very least will be required, you would assume. The manner of this sacking also means the supporters will be far more likely to turn against the manager at the first sign of things going wrong.
A low-profile appointment like Roberto Martinez would magnify this situation in my view. The situation he faces at Wigan is the polar opposite of what he would face at Anfield. At Wigan he works under the most patient chairman in English football. There is very little pressure on him from supporters and media given the club’s small size.
While I have no doubt the Liverpool supporters would at least give him a chance, he would need to prove himself almost immediately. It’s easy to visualise the situation running away from him in the way it did for Hodgson, for Villas Boas at Chelsea and for Mowbray at Celtic.
It’s been mentioned before but it’s interesting to compare Dalglish’s second spell at Liverpool to Ferguson’s first three and a half seasons at Manchester United.
In Dalglish’s half-season he took 33 points from a possible 57 for 6th place. After Ferguson took over in November 1986 he took 43 points from a possible 87 in the remainder of that season to finish 11th.
Ferguson’s United did make distinct progress to finish 2nd in 1988 with 81 points from 40 matches. But they fell away dramatically over the following two seasons. In 1988/89 they finished 11th, with 51 points from 38 matches while in 1989/90 they did even worse, finishing 13th with 48 points from 38 matches, including a 5-1 defeat at newly-promoted Manchester City, and it was that FA Cup run which saved him.
None of that is meant to try and mask Liverpool’s disappointing league finish this season. It’s just to try and put into context how success doesn’t always come immediately and to demonstrate the insane demands made on modern managers, as it’s pretty certain that Ferguson wouldn’t have lasted beyond his second full season in today’s football climate.
Pep Segura, technical director of the academy, Is being promoted to first team duties. Makes sense that if you are gonna instill the one philosophy from U10’s up, it should transcend to the senior team. This would suggest they are in for the long road and the next manager has time, as long as he finishes in the top four of course.

I read somewhere that Liverpool are talking to a number of candidates to give the impression that whoever they go for wasn’t a second or 3rd choice, hence all these names being bandied about. If I was someone with a care for LFC, I wouldnt want Martinez based on his record with Wigan. Personally I dont see the hype.*
*This post stands for puke to reference it incessantly in the years to come should RM become a success at LFC.
The ever reliable Duncan Jenkins on Twitter says they’re going to appoint Txixi Bergurawhatever you call him (ex Barca) as Director of Football and they want more of a ‘coach’ to work under him. Martinez is only one of several candidates to be interviewed apparently.
Dont know how true it is, but Brendan Rodgers apparently turned down the approach made to succeed the King.
For whatever his reasons, fair play to him. Everyone is a winner with this outcome, if you can ignore the fact that some no mark turned down the opportunity to manage the mighty Liverpool Football Club that is.
But I think Brendan is a smart man and realises only Aces beats Kings, and he aint no Ace… yet.
Sure he only madr his name with martinez’ team
Seems like almost everybody has completely forgotten that Chelsea are playing in a European Cup final tomorrow and are still talking about Liverpool. Says it all really about the respective size of the clubs.
I think we need a good debate about what constitutes a big club. Are Chelsea a big club? Are Glasgow Celtic a big club? Liverpool are certainly a big club.
I posted this on the old server I think that Stan Collymore posted a list of the ‘elite’ clubs of European football in twitter. He said his criteria were longevity and domination at home/ multiple trophies abroad. His list in no order was
AC Milan Real Madrid Man United Liverpool Bayern Barca Juve Ajax
Totti suggested Inter who it seems were a glaring omission by Stanley.
