Local GAA Commentators

Today is a day for Syl.

The bould Gerry Russell pulled off a classic last Sunday on Midlands 103.

That John Heslin free to win the game was obviously a massive kick. Tyrone potentially out of the championship. The Westies potentially in the Monday morning last 12 draw.

As a slightly biased neutral, I was thrilled when Gerry called it. “It’s in and it’s over, it’s over” only to be followed by the deathly pause that Gerry comes up with when he realises he’s fucked up again. “It’s not, it’s wide”. I can only imagine how a Westmeath native might have cursed Gerry.

Any Westmeath native is well familiar with Gerry’s penchant to make an absolute bollocks out of every commentary gig he takes. They probably knew it was wide the moment he said it was over.

Seems to be a prerequisite to get local GGA commentary gigs:

Be proficient in proclaiming point attempts at pivotal moments have gone over when they’re actually wide.
