London The Greatest City on the Planet

You’d need the full day.

There was a Holocaust exhibition on the day I was there. It left a lasting impression on me.
Gruelling to say the least…

I was on my own, and spent as much time as I could there, twas well worth the visit.

I needed a couple of pints across the road after it.

Yeah, it is a grim place. I didn’t get the impression it glorified war or the British army at all. It just presented the visual reality of it all.
I remember one thing that stood out in the WW1 exhibition. Most of the soldier’s clothing was based on 19th century warfare. Long heavy coats, big boots etc, lads literally getting bogged down, but WW1 introduced machine guns, tanks, etc, I think the word they used was “industrial slaughter” as a result of the modern canons etc.
Another one was showing how the lads built tunnels, and would often bump into Germans tunnelling the other way, so they’d be lying down face to face in a tunnel trying to shoot or stab each other to death. They used to wear these improvised kind of armoured vests etc in the tunnel. I tried to think of myself in that scenario. I think I would have deserted to some sleepy French village for sure, and hidden in a barn!
Surgeon in the Kaiser’s army is worth a read.

Birdsong is quite a bit about the tunnellers. Obscene what they were put through, what they were all put through, by the arrogance of the aristocracy.
If you read around the northern English history, you realise that the ruling class treated their own poor just as badly as they did us. It’s what happens when folk convince themselves that other folks are subhuman.

London is waning

Help needed.

A good while back I booked chape flights for myself and the eldest 2 (8+6 girls) for a day trip to London.

I was only there once in the heart of the city. The other times were visiting family of Mrs Pox who live on the outskirts

Looking for advice on how to entertain ourselves for the day. Borough Market and walking by Big Ben and onto Buckingham palace is all I have at the minute.

The Science Museum and the Natural History Museum are very close together in Kensington and are out of this world. They will wow kids. They often have science demonstrations in the Science museum that are specifically aimed at kids that are amazing. Do the London Eye. The Aquarium is right beside it. Boat trip on the Thames. Walk through Chinatown. They might be a bit young for the Tower of London and the British Museum, but you will have no difficulty entertaining them.

Thanks. Slow processing speed today.

Had it booked and no prep done.

Book the London Eye in advance. Have a few places to visit and don’t just walk them around the city. It’s too big - it will suck the life out of them. Also bring them in a black cab at least once.

Are you flying into Stansted? Train to Liverpool street so. If Heathrow get the new Elizabeth line.

That place that was in Harry Potter is right beside Liverpool Street.
Edit. It was Diagon Alley in Harry Potter

Stanstead is our airport.

Our crew have no interest in Harry Potter. The science museum is right up their st though

The Stansted Express can be pricy enough if there’s a few of ye.

It actually worked out cheaper for the 4 of us in time to just get an Uber into the where we were going.

A big nod for the Science museum also

Don’t try and do too much. They’ll be too tired as it’s so big. Buckingham place Big Ben a museum or the London eye and shops and a nice lunch

Edit maybe this - horrible histories boat tour

London Eye not worth the cash imo, especially if it’s a cloudy wet day. Much better to go to either the Sky Garden or The Garden at 120, both on Fenchurch St within 3 mins walk of each other and both free. Need to book tkts for Sky Garden but not for Garden at 120.
