Luke Kelly - 25 years gone but not forgotten

I don’t mind Imelda. It’s a terrible collection of cunts on that programme, insufferable cuntery in talking over Raglan Road for example. But I think Imelda is a decent sort.

I’d forgotten how powerful a song Raglan Road is. I listened to so much Luke kelly over the years I’ve kinda ended up leaving a lot of his stuff off my playlists. The power behind his voice is unreal.

Luke Kelly just ranks behind Rino Gaetano for me.

Probably Ireland’s third greatest singer after Paul Brady and Robbie Mcmahon

A like a bit of Luke, but he’d be Junior B compared to the likes of Joe Heaney, Darach Ó Cathain, even Nan Tom Teamín.

Raglan Road is phenomenal, it’s back story is good too, for any who don’t know it. Remember a good piece in the Times about it a while back, might try dig it out later.

I’ve said it here before, but it’s use at the end of In Bruges was just sheer perfection, Gleeson at his very finest.

The clichéd Irish song used in a film full of clichés. Now there is a surprise.

I actual like Raglan Road but really dislike those McDonagh brothers’ films.

You’re alright, pal.

Go on, I’ll bite, what makes Raglan Road a clichĂ©d Irish song and what makes In Bruges a clichĂ©d Irish film? I just want to see you list them out there seeing as you brought it up.

In an interview some years ago, Danny Doyle (Step It Out Mary) was asked about how mad the ballad boom era was and he gave this example;

“you’d be walking down Grafton Street and if you met Luke Kelly you could write off a week”

Here’s the article I mention about Hilda Moriarty and the creation of Raglan Road. Kavanagh sounded like some roaster, and quite frankly, a bit of a weirdo, as I guess, are most poets.

Jesus, you’ve taken that very bad.

Nah, I’d have thought there’s far great clichĂ©d Irish songs than Raglan Road though. That Danny Boy for example, or When Irish Eyes Are Smiling, all used far worse in poorer films. I’m not even much of a fan of In Bruges, but I felt it was excellently used in that movie.

In Bruges is a great film

What us seven psychopaths like? Have it on my watch list for hols

A right good laugh.

Not great. Sam Rockwell is his usual excellent self, Farrell mainly confused for the entirety.

Imelda May is sound, there’s no bullshit about her. Hansard is some dose.

In Bruges is an excellent film and Farrell is excellent in it. Seven Psychopaths is not as good but it is very entertaining and worth a watch, @ciarancareyshurlingarmy.

Luke Kelly is the greatest singer we have ever produced, hands down in my opinion, only Sinead O’Connor comes close, I’ve been pestered to sing Raglan Road on loads of occasions at family do’s because I sang it after my fathers funeral as it was his favourite song, I don’t do a terrible job but nobody can do it like Luke.

Re In Bruges, I’m meaning to watch that again soon after reading this article in last months GQ magazine
