Martin Jol

Bizarre timing that. Sacked before the Getafe game but he sat on the bench all game - still lost though.

Would anyone take him for Ireland?

BBC are saying that Ramos has agreed to take over from the start of next season. Wouldn’t it be hilarious if they were in the Championship then?

Spurs are third from bottom in the Premier League
Tottenham manager Martin Jol has parted company with the north London club.

Jol tendered his resignation before taking charge for the game against Getafe - a 2-1 defeat in the Uefa Cup.

Spurs, who are third from bottom in the Premier League, have won just one league game after spending heavily during the summer transfer window.

Sevilla coach Juane Ramos has reportedly agreed to become Spurs’ new manager at the start of next season.

Spurs reportedly met Ramos in August with a “dizzying” offer to replace the 51-year-old Jol at White Hart Lane.

During the defeat to Getafe in a a Group G game Spurs fans gave vocal support to the Dutchman singing “Stand up for Martin Jol” during the match.

Jol took charge of Spurs in November 2004, taking over from Frenchman Jacques Santini and under the Dutchman the club twice qualified for the Uefa Cup.

Having recruited the likes of Darren Bent, who cost 16.5m, Gareth Bale and French defender Younes Kaboul during the summer, Tottenham had high hopes of challenging for a Champions League place.

But Spurs have suffered a disastrous start, recording just one victory - the 4-0 win over Derby in August - and since the reported meeting with Ramos, Jol has faced constant questioning over his future.

Apparently huge money was placed on Ramos late this evening to take over. First reports said Jol was sacked and now they’re saying he tendered his resignation before the game. Bizarre that he sat on the bench alright. I’m not sure what went on at Spurs this season but he seemed quite capable up to then. I’d class him as a good candidate for the Ireland job but not sure how attractive a proposition that would be for him.

I’d like to know how much money Jol spent while he was at Spurs. 16m for Darren Bent and 8m odd for Jenas stand out.

I thought he did a poor job giving the money he spent. Wouldn’t like him for Ireland

Why would he be a good candidate? Spurs wasted big money and ended up being a bit of a shambles. Ireland could do far better than Jol.

He got plenty of money in for Carrick though. I think he made a net income on the transfer market in 2006 so had a bit more to spend this summer.

Agree with the central point though that he had enough time to shape that team into something and they never looked more than the sum of their parts. Ireland need to do better than that.

Don’t think he’d want the Irish job and not sure I would want him to be honest, he’d be too close to Robbie Keane. We need someone who is not afraid to make the big decisions, for example drop Robbie when he is not performing. The closest we came to that was in the final game against the Swiss for the 2006 WC qualifying when Brian Kerr withdrew him with 20mins remaining. IMO Kerr had the right idea but did it arseways, he should have dropped the little sh!t, got him all wound up and brought him on with a point to prove. At the end of the day, if you’re chasing a goal you need your record goalscorer on the pitch.

As for Jol for Ireland - no thanks.

Also, I read somewhere today that Jol found out he’d been sacked during the game after one of the board text him to tip him off, bizarre if it’s true.

I suppose I might have overstated his case alright. In his defence he got Spurs playing some good football in his first two years there but things have gone terribly awry this season.

That said the board have consistently undermined him since August when first reports of them trying to entice Ramos appeared.

On the other hand spending nearly 30m during the summer on Bent and Bale displayed a lack of judgement given they lack a presence in the centre of defence to play alongside King and don’t have any central midfielder of note at all.

The reason I mentioned him was because I reckon he could actually get us playing semi-decent football based on retaining possession given he would have been schooled in the Dutch way of coaching, which places an emphasis on passing and technical ability.

I think whether we can do far better than Jol or not depends on the ambition of the FAI and the financial package they offer. If it’s not an attractive package for top class coaches then we could end up with dross like Aldridge. :-))
