We’ve had plenty of worse performances since unfortunately.
Idiosyncratic yes. Weirdo no. Many excellent managers are idiosyncratic. MO’N’s record in club and international football is up there with any Irish manager before or since. He made mistakes with the international job but overall did a very good job with a limited group. He could be stubborn, ruthless, paranoid and a bit insecure which manisfeted itself at times. Some of that paranoia was perfectly justified. His treatment by the Irish media was pretty disgraceful and I think if he were born elsewhere in Ireland it may have been different. For me MO’N gave me some of the happiest memories of my life and I have the height of admiration for him as a manager and a person. His flaws make him all the more endearing.
The thing that surprised me, was his behaviour given his track record. I thought he’d be so far above getting caught up in media sniping that I found it odd and a little sad. His record spoke for itself. He could have just laughed it off, and been a bit more open and friendly, but he spiralled into paranoia.
