Micko

If chasing money around the country is your gauge, Micko is indeed miles ahead of Gavin.

Anthony Daly was managing the Dublin hurlers out of the goodness of his heart too, wasn’t he.

I’m sure he was but i wouldn’t try and claim he was miles ahead of Brian Cody or John Kiely. The eulogising of Micko as some sort of football missionary is ignoring the fact that he was at least partially in it for the money.

A few months back, I was informed by a credible source (a former accountant who worked for Micko ) that he had legally transferred his entire estate to his new partner. According to him, the change was deeply puzzling, particularly given Micko’s long-standing reputation for being an extremely tight cunt who would mind mice at a crossroads for you . An how any solicitor could have approved such a substantial amendment to his will without clear, documented assurance that Micko was compos mentis at the time. The whole thing reportedly caused a serious rift with his family, who felt blindsided and ultimately fell out with him.

That’s a fair harsh epitaph

A man nearly 90 has just passed away.

You - and others on here - having snide little pot shots at the recently deceased says more about you (and them) than him.

Daly vs Cody and Micko vs Gavin really stacks up as a comparison

The GAA becoming a professional basketball league would be the ultimate tribute to Mick O’Dwyer.

Your original post dismissed Gavin because he hasn’t successfully managed Carlow or Sligo. It was a nonsense post and i just pointed that out. This is a discussion forum. Come down off your high horse.

It is a harsh comment in fairness. I’m going to change it to partially.

Micko was self funding. Money never flowed into Laois GAA as readily as it did during his time there. Same in Kildare. Same in Wicklow. Whatever he pulled in, he was absolutely worth it.

Could we say the same about a Davy?

It’s gas how insecure the Dubs are when it comes to Kerry in football. Unusual for a capital city. Kerry shit all over them and they can’t handle it at all.

You have to love those salty, salty culchie tears.

100% in Wexford.

Totally self funding.

Gavin was a brilliant coach. Almost too good to the extent that he completely demoralised all opponents bar Mayo and to a lesser extent Kerry. I’d be fascinated to see how much he could achieve with a mid-ranking team with potential (Kildare) or a relative minnow (Wicklow). There was plenty of cynicism and lateral/safe possession retention in the game before his emergence in 2013. Jim McGuinness is largely credited as the genesis of that change. Jim Gavin perfected the calculated approach to be fair. Ciaran Kilkenny’s performances during those years encapsulated that style.

They wanted him at some stage in the 00’s allegedly but couldn’t get him. I presume it must’ve been when Pillar Caffrey was departing in 2008. I didn’t fully believe it myself now tbh.

Ciaran Kilkenny missed the 2014 season and thus that semi-final against Donegal through injury. I don’t think it would have changed the result.

That day was the only time Jim Gavin and Jim McGuinness faced each other in senior championship football. They did face each other in the 2010 All-Ireland Under 21 final which Dublin won.

It’s the only All-Ireland semi-final won by a team which went on to lose the final is better remembered than the final. Nobody knows who won the All-ireland that year. I think most people think Donegal won it. Winning that semi-final was bigger than winning the All-Ireland.

You’d know it was a Kerry title when the Dublin backers have this opinion😅 The Kerry v Mayo replay that year was equally if not more iconic than Donegal v Dublin.

Yes it was iconic because of the Mayoness of it all.

Aidan O’Shea and Cillian O’Connor crashed into each other and neither knew what sport they were playing after that never mind what day it was.

A Mayo man invaded the pitch to berate the referee, got himself arrested and still had time to have a hape of pints, pose for selfies with entire clientele of Supermacs and do the ice bucket challenge that night.

It doesn’t get more Mayo than that, except for scoring two own goals in an All-Ireland final.
