Munster Rugby - We DID start the fire (Part 1)

Have you not read any of the posts from earlier at All? Munster offered 300k.

300k from Munster?

400k in France? For a lot more hardship? Would he not get IRFU appearance money as well.

Dunno if its that great a deal so.

That issue is Munsterā€™s.

They are in the shit financially, that is their fault.

This is crying over a player who is 33 and has had a good run of form now being seen as indispensable. That is ludicrous.

Contrary to the latest meme that Toner is shite and wonā€™t get back into Irelandā€™s plans, he has plenty of very good days for Ireland. He is younger and was seen as more important probably up until the Six Nations. He is hardly world class but has a role to play for Ireland in plenty of games.

Heaslip is certainly at the edge of reasonability age wise if you look at his age versus Ryan but;

  • he is objectively a better player. He is a two Tour Lions Test player
  • he has been rarely injured

Heaslip is one of the best Irish players of the professional era. After Oā€™Connell and Oā€™Driscoll, he has to be in the conversation. Wallace is arguably there but even he was dropped for several years. Hayes is there as well just for consistency. Iā€™d argue that itā€™s Oā€™Driscoll, Oā€™Connell, Oā€™Gara, Heaslip and Hayes being the most important/consistent players for Ireland over the course of their careers and professionally. Given that his game hasnā€™t fallen off massively and he has a better injury profile, comparing the age to Ryan just isnā€™t the same.

If Toner was the same age Iā€™d expect him to lose his contract (unless a WC was the year after, the Ryan situation would be different if the WC was next year).

Yes that appears to be situation. Itā€™s not quite as straightforward as 100k of a gap. There is a significant tax advantage I believe in your first years living in France so the net difference is probably far more significant. And maybe he just fancies a change

I donā€™t read anything you write approaching that long. Bullets?

Open to new experience Iā€™d say

Agree but in theory Leinster would have kept heaslip without the irfu then both would still be available to Ireland. Also Conan and stander are two serious players to replace heaslip ready made.

How many South Africans are on the IRFU books now?

Thatā€™s a fair point alright but neither are absolutes yet and thatā€™s because Heaslip has kept his place. Up until recently Ryan wasnā€™t in that position.

Iā€™d say that if Heaslip had the injury profile Ryan does then heā€™d be off one. And if Heaslip didnā€™t get one then Ryan would probably have had a better chance.

I imagine the IRFU weigh up the risks overall of their pool. Of the 15 or so you have some might get injured, some might fall off a cliff form wise et cetera. The more older players the riskier it becomes. Same with younger players, they arenā€™t risking these on young unproven players yet. Itā€™s a question of finite resources as ever.

Ryan actually didnā€™t play for Ireland for the first two seasons he was under a central contract as he was injured. Definitely clouded the thinking

Yeah absolutely. Itā€™s risky for them always.

In terms of how it works I think for example that Marty Moore would likely have been signed up for one if Furlong wasnā€™t so highly rated coming through. Healy required renewal at the same time and they made a judgement call that for their prop stocks they wanted to keep McGrath and Healy. If Furlong wasnā€™t coming through then the IRFU are more eager to sign up Moore than retain an injury ravaged Healy. Leinster had Furlong tied up for another two years so the same pressing need isnā€™t there. Nucifora wasnā€™t much arsed with Moore and that was for a reason. They took a risk, as always.

Meanwhile Bowe has blocked Zebo from getting a central contract but unlike Moore with Leinster, they found the money to keep him. He could easily be in Toulouse right now and not in the Ireland picture.

Earls has one too which doesnā€™t help zebos case. So does trimble.Munster managed to sign Zebo up when he was in nothing like the form he is in now. All about timing and good luck plays a big part of it.

There isnā€™t really all that many hugely pressing cases at the minute to award central contracts to. Furlong, Ringrose the only two very obvious cases. They didnā€™t even give one to paddy jackson.

Fabulous post

This.

Are you on drugs?

Heaslip was a genius at going missing for years. He used to freeze all the time for Ireland. His improvement and consistency has been quite recent. Putting him up there with those lads is thee most biased rugby shite i have read/heard in a long time.

Donā€™t agree at all. Heaslip is some cunt but by Christ is he a smashing rugby player. One of Irelandā€™s greatest ever. Donā€™t think any coach that has had the opportunity to select him hasnā€™t done so.

Short memories from when?

The hatred for Heaslip is baffling, he might be a social media bellend but he is a great player.

can you throw up some youtube clips of his great plays?

I believe that he is an aficionados player. People like me who know fuck all about the game think heā€™s shit because you rarely see him smash fellas or break the line for 40 yards (Stander, Oā€™Brien and Oā€™Mahony.
Theres unseen work at play here obviously. Either way I donā€™t think heā€™s the player he was 7 or 8 years ago.
