The townies are the only ones there not seriously punching above their weight
Sure the lads all have county medals already. They’re grand.
Considering the ridiculous depth of talent that Na Piarsaigh have, every time one of the other teams breaks that is a serious achievement. Now Na Piarsaigh’s dominance won’t last forever, but it’s probably Doon who are best-positioned in terms of age profile & talent to take the mantle rather than the Well. But then Doon are Doon; until they win their first, there will be a mental block of sorts.
The Well’s supporting case is decent but would have a few weak links, which aren’t really visible in Na Piarsaigh. You could argue that Adrian Breen is Na Piarsaigh’s 4th or 5th best forward, and he’s an absolutely lethal sharpshooter at club level.
Nap have very little coming in behind this generation and will fall behind monaleen and mungret through sheer weight of numbers
Plucked?
How does that compare to notorious hurling country of West Clare?
The townies are the only ones there not seriously punching above their weight
Would disagree with you there on some of the teams. Feohanagh have been intermediate for years, given that they have the likes of former Limerick u21 lads in Seanie Flanagan and Jamie Butler, not mention Seamus Flanagan, and their history of providing players to Limerick senior teams, I would argue that they are under-performing at their current level, they really should be Premier.
Ballingarry were senior for a decade til 2015, probably over-achieved but could well be Premier again, they’re not far off.
My own dear Croagh have lost the last two intermediate finals. I think we’ve proved we are more than good enough for this level and will hopefully graduate to Premier soon.
St Kierans are the only ones there truly punching, and having seen them this year already, I’d expect them to go straight back down.
Im talking purely in terms of volume, not qaulity but thats a good post
NaP’s total dominance will end eventually but they still have a couple of fellas on county teams at every age group which a lot of clubs can only dream of.
Population starting to age a bit and Monaleen & Mungret would have bigger numbers underage alright but those teams are still lacking the “marquee” players that will kick them on to win a senior county. Now, they might be coming down the tracks but Doon are better set up in the short term if they can keep English fit. A couple of older heads alright but have already incorporated a lot more from their successful minor & 21s sides than the others.
They’re getting beaten at all age groups. One or two wont sustain it.
They’ve been saying that for decades in Cork with Ballincollig, Bishopstown and Douglas etc and it has never come to happen, population is only the start of it
Monaleen are just after winning an all ireland
I agree Feohanagh have some quality but they have absolutely nothing coming through underage as far as I can tell and seem to be hit by emigration way worse than some of the other teams around there.
Butler & Flanagan are 28 this year and Butler isn’t as fit as he once was. As those fellas move into their 30s, they’ll struggle to stay Intermediate. Knockaderry probably have a similar struggle, the golden generation is retired/retiring and while they have a bit more coming through than Feohanagh (that Molloy is a nice hurler), numbers are always going to be a struggle.
G/B & C/K would have a lot more youth and will continue to push for Premier in the coming years. NCW must be up there as strong favourites to go senior this year, particularly with Finn’s cruciate.
Kieran’s actually do have numbers, in fairness to them, but it’s football country really.
How do those clubs do at underage? Do they win titles.
Between Monaleen, Mungret, Doon & NCW; they’ve been the big teams at minor level in Limerick for the past few years.
Ballybrown & Garryspillane both won back-to-back minors before that but maybe they were more one-off sides while the above 4 will probably expect to be getting to semi-finals at least for the next few years aswell. Consistently bringing through players is key, but you need a few stars to really kick yourself on.
Hasn’t been a launching pad to senior success, but they’re well placed
Bruree won a county and had they anyone playing with Limerick?
Mungret are even better placed. They’ll both be super clubs
Steve McDonagh, but I wouldn’t take Bruree’s one off as any kind of indicator for other clubs.
Stephen McDonagh
And James O’Brien played a bit for the county
James Vincent O’Brien, I think would have been.
Kieran O’Rourke & Tommy O’Brien made the panel in later years too.
And they had McDonagh.
But, without trying to be dismissive of their victory, it was some win; the general standard of Limerick club hurling was waaaay lower back then. There’s been a huge step-up since about 2010.
