Hurling needs people like Tom Ryan.

Discussion of hurling and indeed GAA in general needs to be laced with real old style cut and anger. And personal vendettas.

People don’t want to read dry columns about puckout strategies.

They want to read columnists who seethe with personal vendettas.

Hurling discussion is supposed to be entertainment, soap opera and WUM.

Less Joe Cannings and more Tom Ryans, please.

I’m looking forward to the midweek studio panel discussion programme “The Hurling Man’s Hurling Show” featuring PM O’Sullivan, Kevin Cashman, Babs Keating and Tom Ryan, based on association football’s “The Footballer’s Football Show”.

Unlikely the bould Kevin would be able to make it at this stage but I imagine Andy Comerford would be an able replacement. I also want Daithi Regan and Brian Cody involved. I want Tony Considine involved. I want Mike Houlihan involved. I want lesser lights involved. Fellas who have got on with their lives out of the spotlight since playing hurling but have built up a head of steamy opinions while out of the spotlight. This is the pool Andy Comerford was sourced from. I want Eddie O’Connor involved. He’s surely in the same pool.

You need to be aiming at the broadsheet market. It has to be a rounded, thinking man’s discussion. It should be like “After Dark” on Ye Olde Channel 4. You need the sort of discussion that would have taken place in Ye Olde Leeson Lounge (RIP) on a Tuesday night when there were few other people about the place and you’d be at the bar and you’d see three men of retirement age off in the corner and you’d overhear the words “Rackard” and “Eddie Keher”. Then you’d overhear slightly raised voices, with proper emphasis being put into points. The discussion needs to be quiet and needs to be cutting. This mean YouTuber buffoons like Buff Egan are not welcome.

What you need to be aiming at is discussion conducted through something similar to the quiet voice of James Sloyan. What made Sloyan was the gravitas of that quiet voice. That is what you go to pubs for. It’s the way I was learned in pubs in 1991/1992. You fucking listened to the man speaking, because they knew what they were talking about.

The discussion needs to steadily build up steam, like Sloyan would, in his quiet voice. The panellists need to hold court. The quiet but tangible frustration in the voice of each panellist with the other panellists, especially when they’re interrupted and their flow is disturbed, needs to become more and more apparent as it goes on. The voices need to raise slightly as the programme goes on. There needs to be veiled yet pointed digs.

Then the climax, where proper personal digs are thrown and old vendettas come to the surface.

I’m very undecided.
When I searched this thread I see at the top that I went for Cork in January.
I’m not so sure now.
I see Limerick are slight favourites with PP. 11/10, 10/11.
