News of the World Phone Hacking Scandal

No doubts this was done to save the merger/the Gingeā€™s ass

This must not be the end of the story, a continuity NOTW will be just as bad - and that ginger bitch needs to be taken down as do Murdoch, Cameron and the PDC.

John Higgins

Coulson is to be arrested tomorrow. Why not now and why not Brooks? The buck must stop with the editor at the time. Her career should be toast.

She was on holidays Sid.
She knew nothingā€¦

Iā€™m amazed she hasnā€™t been forced to resign yet. Assumed Murdoch had more savvy than that. Unless she has some dirt on him it makes no sense.

Channel 4 were certainly insinuating that she was protecting Murdochs and could well have stuff on them. Then again not sure she would be prepared to fling dirt on them.
Sky makes 1 billion a year while News Of World makes 40 million. Sky is far more important.

bizarre people are so delighted that a newspaper they dont read is closing. these people wont rest until the working class read a tabloid that thy approve
the likes of the epl fans such as braz & runt that still subsidise newscorp acting all righteous is hillarious

At first glance this seems like the right thing to do but this is cynical as fuck. Heā€™ll run the Sun seven days a week now and reduce his wage bill. This is a move to try and protect the take over by News Intl of BSkyB which is being heavily criticised for creating monopolies etc. Breathtaking that Brooks is hanging on but she apparently is like ā€œfamilyā€ to Murdoch whatever that means. Coulson will be arrested tomorrow, he is being made the fall guy, probably in his interest to sing like a canary now.

will you get rid of your sky subscription as a matter of principle

Youā€™ve got me all wrong here mate. Personally, Iā€™m going to miss the regular stream of quality scoops from The Fake Sheikh.

Paul Williams not getting a redundancy check is a nice thought I must say

Things are starting to make more sense now. From someone who knows:
An Ofcom finding of unfitness to own BSkyB would prevent News Intl from buying or opening anything new in China for between 5-10 yrs, depending on the type of media. Chinese regulators immediately disqualify any would-be media owner from buying if they have such a finding on their record in the past decade.

But News Corp are still in for Sky. Them not owning NOW makes it easier for them to argue that the danger of plurality in media being in danger if they take complete control of Sky is now lessened as they donā€™t have as much media control. This is all about Sky imo. British Government are ruling on plurality alone. If Ofcom ruled they werenā€™t fit for ownership it would be ideal but doesnā€™t look as though News Corp are pulling out. In actual fact everything they are doing would suggest they are doing their upmost to ensure take over is successful (albeit they may have to wait a bit if necessary).

Question Time should be good tonight anyway. Starts in five minutes.

Exactly. By washing their hands of the NOTW and handing Coulsen over they can argue against any question of their unfitness

Did you read Hugh Grants article larry?

No. He is on Question Time at present. Link please.

Thanks. Will check it out later.

Donā€™t have one mate. I live outside the British Isles. I get my football from canal +. And I have no principles.

I hope Bertie is not getting one as well. Still though it must be hard to take for the 20 or so Irish workers and their 200 colleagues in the UK, especially at a time like this where the newspaper industry is under real pressure to cut costs to compete with the online news sites.

I have no sympathy though for anyone involved in the phone hacking scandal and each one of them should be hauled before the courts to account for what they have done? This also brings up another point were the same tactics carried out here by the News of the world and should the Gardai be looking into this?
