Niall Breslin - Carrying the hopes of a nation

Whatever about Brezzies experiences, you’d have to take the man at his word, kids were being hit after corporal punishment was banned.
Back home you went into the CBS from 2nd to 6th class. You’d get the odd clip going up through the classes but nothing out of the ordinary. However, we had a Christian Brother in 6th class, a young fella who subsequently left the order the year after, he dished it out. We lived in fear. Saw him bate a lad from one end of the class to the other. In fairness the chaps father came in the next day and tore strips off him, can still remember the beetroot head on him when he returned to class - but also the feeling of fear not to misbehave or you’d get it as a reprisal.
Whether TNH to Brezzie or not is one thing, but it happened. When we started 6th class I returned to school with my arm in a cast. In our first week I must have been talking to the lad beside me in class, most likely during a writing lesson or something. That same CB said to the class that if the boy who is talking doesn’t stop he’ll walk out of here with another broken arm. Take from that what you want but what he said was all kinds of wrong on so many levels.

Sounds like they didn’t take kindly to a young prod coming to the catholic school

A few clatters did no one any harm back then.

A friend of mine got punched in the stomach by our woodwork teacher around 1994/95. There was still a few auld dinosaurs around during that era. I got a few wallops of a ruler in primary school.

Fierce brittle bones those COI lads have, always said it.

Why would you take Brezzi at his word when he’s personal stories of woe have been known to be untrue ? ‘Hey lads, this fella is a serial liar but he has to be telling the truth this time…’

Of course he’s lying but I wouldn’t use the 1982 rule as evidence. Beatings went on well into the early 90s.

A little nod to @TreatyStones and the haters too

That gas man Cian Twomey was able to buy a house out of his 15 minutes of fame. Without seeing Bressie’s island hard to know if it’s anything to be proud of

More lies from Brezzie. A lad I know says he lived with them for 6 months without paying any rent.

Does Brezzie have a mortgage?

He’s lived rent free in heads here for years too

I often got a beating in school as well. Nothing too serious but enough to halt your gallop

I was a good lad so I got away with the odd whack to the back of the neck or a wallop with a pen on the knuckles.

I saw lads of around 11 years of age being assaulted. No other word for it. A beast from Cork was responsible actually. An alcoholic. Kids in fear of a thrashing the next day if Cork lost a hurling or a football match.
