Obese Ireland

Plenty of those u21 - I see plenty of it in and around Mary I when iā€™m in. Iā€™ve also worked in a shop part time and school kids buy noting but shite all day long.

I know a host of primary teachers who see kids marching in the door at 9 eating such crap also-

Itā€™s bad parenting all round - They have thrown money at kids for the last ten years and told them look after themselves for lunch etc- Naturally they are gonna choose junk. Of course itā€™s not all of them, but throughout the course of a day 2 bottles of pop, 2 chocolate bars and crisps would make up most 15-21 yr olds diets in betwwen 1-2 solid meals.

you went to school? :o :o :o :o :o

I owned that school mate and I was the best speller in class.

Sugar tax raised again yesterdayā€¦ 1/4 of children under 10 are obese:eek::eek::eek:

That is very sad. We live in a failed society.

How can parents be so shit as to let their kids become fat little piggies? Are they all children of chubby parents?

Even aside from junk food there is a problem with food culture now. Everyone wis a wannabe ā€˜foodieā€™ that want to ā€˜treat themselvesā€™ all the time and tell everyone about it on social media. It seems to be worse with girls. Also, womenā€™s obsession with wine seems to be a whole new thing.

we are a nation of savages mateā€¦we donā€™t know how to taste food or alcohol and enjoy the flavourā€¦we just gorge on it in large quantitiesā€¦we are as bad as the brits and catching up on the Americans when it comes to pigging outā€¦

I think parents start off with the best intentions of feeding their kids well but if you have 2 or 3 kids and both parents are working its probably a lot easier hand the kids junk food to keep them quiet when you are bolloxed instead of trying to coax them into eating a carrotā€¦

The drink culture is getting worse and encouraged by media all around. That wine thing with girls is ridiculous though, all over Facebook every other day.

And of course it might be easier throw junk food at a child but that is a savage indictment on the parent. Even with a moderately decent diet kids should be getting enough exercise not to be getting fat anyway.

Most of the food that makes kids fat has become the norm I suppose. Two parents working flat out to pay a mortgage probably doesnā€™t help on the healthy eating front either.

Well it is a combination of a few things. The vast majority of anything you see advertised on TV is bad for you. While itā€™s far too easy to say marketing is to blame for peopleā€™s problems, capitalism makes it as hard as possible for people to be healthy. If you go into e.g. an Esso these days have a walk around and see what they are selling. The vast majority of their floor space is taken up by chocolate, sweets, crisps and fizzy drinks. They have some bare essentials there too but they are going to sell what makes them the most money.

Itā€™s all about having good routines and making good choices. Weak, lazy parents will most likely have fat children as they will give them what is easiest not what is healthiest. I wouldnā€™t say they are all children of chubby parents but if the parents have bad habits and are weak you know the children are going to inherit those bad habits.

It doesnā€™t have to be a garden fresh organic paleo diet to keep kids from being fat. A bit of common sense and some exercise should keep any kid from being fat. There really is no excuse for it.

It certainly doesnā€™t- Traditional family dinner time is rare enough for many. Convienience food is what it is-Pizza, chicken nuggets, even spag boll from frozen. All full of sodium and additives.

Depends on how you are raised - a good chunk of your income should go on feeding yourself properly.

Lots of people refuse to spend money or time on food. If you make a small effort and make a cottage pie, shepherds pie, spag bol and a stew at weekend and freeze them you have decent dinners with meat and veg for a week.
stir fry, omelete, burger, steak or fish the other night and thatā€™s your weekdays and then by all means get the take away on Saturday.

It takes serious preparation and effort and you wont get it right every eveningā€¦ but you simply cant have your kids eating shite food.

This is the scenario 4 days a week in our houseā€¦ 2 parent arriving home at 6.30pm after being up since 6.30am so fairly whacked, the kid is cranky as bed time looms close. So its easy thrown on a few oven chips and grill a few sausages, which would often happen of a Friday evening in fairnessā€¦ BUTā€¦ It literally takes 10 minutes to thrown together and omelet, or grill a bit of salmon, or spent a few hours Saturday prepreparing a few other dishes like stews, Lasagnes etc.

There is no excuse apart from lack of education on basic nutrition which unfortunately is rampant.

Snap, fucking snap. I know this well. Our little lady has become a picky eater over the last 4-5 months as well, blanking loads of decent food while wanting dry couscous/rice/pasta. Fish fingers have become her sole source of fish as opposed to having a go at whatever fish we ate before. A handy thing to keep in the fridge is tofu. Not the manky squashy white mush variety. Most health shops stock weird varieties of harder, flavoured (basil/tomato/garlic etc) tofus. The little one loves it and you know she is getting a tonne of protein.

sums it up really. the level of education there is staggering. there is so much wrong with yer one and that article its unreal. so much incrrect things there taken as fact. 3 fillets for ā‚¬7.50? me fucking hoop.

adults can choose to eat shit and crap, kids cant. its up to parents to give them the best healthy options and they will eat it. my own little one loves raw carrot and she goes through heaps of sultanas and raisins. I know of someone who was telling me recently they bring their 2 year old to mcdonalds at least once a week, and they dont live in a town where it might be a walk away from them or anywthing. They drive a good bit to get there just to get her Mcdonalds.

What did you have in your falafel today, mate?

pitta, hareef, hommous, tehina, chips, tomatoe, cucumber, red cabbage, very hot peppers on the side
