The old question here though - is it a sign of the bigger clubs declining ??
Not necessarily, that said, no Lismore representation on the panel, and two subs from Mt Sion when traditionally theyâd be dominating underage teams
The decline of Portlaw has been a real hammer blow to Mt Sion.
Thought An Rinn was an area of transplanted Connemara people. But on second thoughts, that might be the Gaeltacht in Meath. Even though I know a lot of Mayo people went there as well.
eh?? do expand?
There was traditionally a lot of movement of players from Portlaw to Mt Sion
Rathcairn in Meath youâre thinking of.
Wilk is Wolf. Timmy Wolf
No Ring is an original Gaeltacht.
Athea connections ???
Would that be a Germanic rather than Slavic name ???
No I wouldnât think so. Itâs more a question of the bigger clubs changing - largely due to demographics and housebuilding. If you were to look for the biggest single item that had an impact on club hurling in Waterford it was the decision in 1980 to extend the city boundary on the south side from Newtown to Passage Cross. From the 1930s until the 1980s almost all of the housing built in and around the city was built on the West side of the city, Lismore Lawn, Lisduggan, Hillview, Keaneâs Road, Griffith Avenue, Slievekeale and Roanmore. All in Mount Sions patch. John Park became Erinâs Own territory and Ballybeg spawned St Saviours. Roanmore hived off to Roanmore but otherwise the vast bulk of new housing in the city was Mount Sion.
After the 1980 boundary extension the focus of development changed and a huge amount of housing was built on the Dunmore and Williamstown roads all in the Ballygunner catchment. The only counterweight to this was Carrickphierish which De La Salle claimed after Mount Sion took their eye off the ball. So now you have Ballygunner and De La Salle sitting in the new housing areas and the other clubs sitting in catchment areas with aging populations and trying to get by with children of former players which is not easy.
Polish surname.
A useless fact -The Irish once spoken in Limerick was said to be the same as that spoken in An Rinn ⌠Brian Boruâs gang were historically from modern Waterford region before rocking up and ruling north Munster.
End useless fact.
Palatine
This is a very highly rated Cork team⌠Super stars they were described to me as. Hopefully a few of the Limerick lads put in a decent showingâŚ
William Buckley not named to start. Heâll be a huge loss for Cork in this
Heard the same down this way. Extremely well regarded
All you want is a couple of lads to stick their hand up and show potential. Best we can hope for.
Staying with them till half time is a win here
