Another much loved RTE minority sport commentating stalwart in Jerry Kelly is back for the menâs individual all round gymnastics final.
I was just flicking through the results so far in the womenâs section and I was rocked to the core to see that Romania didnât have even one gymnast qualify for the Olympics (as opposed to not qualifying for the final) in the individual all round event, and they also failed to qualify for the Olympics in the team event.
Itâs tragic to see the sudden sharp decline of one of the sportâs great nations. Itâs like having an association football World Cup without Italy.
The Russians also appear to be a pale shadow of what they were.
Womenâs gymnastics is almost entirely dominated by the USA these days. Simone Biles is 1/10 to take individual gold and bookies rate her team mate Aly Raisman as her only threat. 2012 champion Gabby âthe Flying Squirrelâ Douglas isnât even allowed into the final to defend her title despite finishing a narrow third best in the qualification on Sunday as each country is allowed a maximum of two individual final participants.
The USA are 1/200 for the team event.
This lack of competition is very sad for what has always been the piece de resistance of the entire Games as far as Iâm concerned.

Sentimental favourites Russia pipped the Chinese to silver but the Brits blew a podium place in the final rotation.
