Olympics 2016

Haigh is an Aussie journalist but probably syndicated by the groaniad.

@myboyblue I trust you’ll be setting up a Ladies of the 2016 Olympics thread, encompassing both fans, and athletes?

Anybody who heard this chap being interviewed on Off The Ball back around April/May couldn’t have but been impressed by him. He was told at the age of 10 he’d never walk again, receives just €380 a month in funding and works on building sites when he’s not training in order to support himself.

Competing on Saturday, starting at 2:30pm Irish time (I think).

"Poison in the pool: can scandal-hit swimming be trusted in Rio? | Andy Bull

Away from the spotlight of stars such as Adam Peaty, Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky, some nations will not be sending their best swimmers to Rio, while leading figures call for wholesale reform of the sport"

@Declan_Moffat
The absolute gent who does the boat for me for the bay swim each year, and refuses to take a penny in return, won the qualifiers for the Irish team for the Olympic sailing in London, and the same happened to him. Someone else was picked. The utter utter pricks involved should be mortified beyond sleeping.

Rock Climbing and Surfing admitted to the next Olympics.
With any bit of effort we could get hurling included I’d say.

Anything’s possible. We got Surfing in.

“Surfing” :joy:

or horse racing,

Absolutely

Let’s not get carried away here

Darts is surely only a matter of time.
And monopoly.

Skateboarding is in too :joy:

Katie Taylor has to win one contest and she is guaranteed a medal in the womans ‘boxing’

Some irish boxer has failed a drug test. Lovely stuff, hope its Paddy Barnes MBE

Can we get a full list of male irish boxers at the olympics?

Nevermind

Paddy Barnes
Michael Conlan
Joe Ward
Brendan Irvine
David Oliver Joyce
Michael O’Reilly
Steven Donnelly

Barnes seems a complete knob allright

My money is on Joyce.

Have many medals are we realistically looking at?

Taylor, Barnes, Conlan,…

I assume none of our Track and Field competitors have a hope?

Harrington in golf, lannigan okeefe in modern pentathlon

Track and field - mark English 800m if he gets to a final and it is not a time trial he could be a surprise

Rob Heffernan 50km walk has a chance

I suppose the Greg Broderick will have a chance in the show jumping too.

What about that sailing girl who did well in London? Analise Murphy?
