Sunday August 30th down the years:

1987: Cork defeat Galway 0-18 to 1-4 in a BAD replayed All-Ireland football semi-final which I must have watched but have no specific recollection of watching. Cork always beat Galway in everything, ever. Ben Johnson defeats Carl Lewis in the World Championship 100 metres in a race I have a very specific recollection of listening to on the radio in the car on the coast road - the main road - between Galway and Oranmore. Jimmy Magee was commentating on the radio and said Carl Lewis would win.

1992: I have no recollection of anything that happened on this date. Actually I do, it was the day Jason Cundy of Tottenham Hotspurs hoofed the ball into the air at Portman Road and all the way into the Ipswich Town net of Craig Forrest who stumbled and landed on his arse in the very back of the net, beside the ball. A goal you all remember.

1998: Kildare beat Kerry by one point on a day in which Croke Park looked, in the words of Mick Dunne about a different match, like a Mediterranean sports stadium. Mick O’Dwyer’s greatest ever triumph. Michael Owen scored a hat trick for Liverpool away to Newcastle United and rubbed his hands. Liverpool never played Newcastle United in the month of August again.

2009: Kerry beat Meath in a terrible All-Ireland football semi-final. 2009 must have been the worst Ye Olde GAA August on record.

2015: A prototype TITANIC Dublin v Mayo clash. Peak poisonous Cillian O’Connor. Keegan and Dermo rolling around in the hay like Miley and Fidelma. Aidan O’Shea and Philly McMahon butting heads. Colm Boyle swan diving. Paul Flynn extravagantly opening the door to a Mayo comeback with a genre of wide I can only clunkily call an “unwisely rubbing an opponent’s nose in it wide”. Literal steam coming out of Stephen Cluxton’s ears. That day we LIVED. To quote Con Houlihan you knew at the time “these are the good old days”. Oh how it MATTERED. We go again next Saturday.

2020: I recall walking up the road with a Sunday Independent I had found on the back of a truck, thinking to myself “the All-Ireland football final was supposed to be on today. Well I suppose if Covid has done one good thing it’s to do away with the nonsense idea of having an All-Ireland football final in August. Far too early.”

2026: The GAA Congress is taking place in a field in Laois.

30 years ago today, 1 September 1996, 14 man Wexford won their most recent hurling All Ireland beating favourites Limerick in the final.

Hard to credit that there is more time has passed between then and now than between 1968 and 1996.

Only if you see time to be a linear concept.

1 September 1940 Limerick beat Kilkenny in the AI Final. Our last for 33 years.

1 September 1968, Wexford come from 11 points down just before half time to beat Tipperary. I think I’m correct in saying that’s the biggest deficit ever clawed back by a winning All Ireland final team. Wexford didn’t win it again for another 28 years until 1 September 1996.

There was a man in the full back line (and was roasted) for Tipp that day who taught in Templemore.

When the match was broadcast on All Ireland Gold on TnaG, as it was at the time, a student commented to said teacher the morning after that he had seen him on the TV the previous night.

Pupil was taken to task by the former Tipp player with a few boxes around the head. Different times

Liverpool beat Manchester United 0-3 at Old Trafford on 1 September 2024 so half of Wexford kept that All-Ireland final victory sequence going.

Celtic also beat Rangers 3-0 that day so it was a great day for Fenians in Wexford all round with the two Catholic teams winning.

Mid 90s? Hardly

Don’t you just hate bullies

Iconic stuff.
