32 years ago today, 4 September 1994, the biggest ever collapse in an All Ireland Hurling Final. Limerick in a seemingly unassailable position of leading by 6 with a few mintues to go somehow contrive to lose by 6.
One of my earliest memories. My mam cried a lot.
Sunday September 6th down the years:
1981: Offaly and the leaping blonde bombshell Pat Delaney reel in Galway in one of the greatest All-Ireland hurling finals in one of the best early September airs ever produced. A Jarly goal by Johnny Flaherty is the decisive score. A Galway work colleague of me oul’ fella claimed for years that “he threw the ball into the net”. Flaherty did not throw it, he Jarlied it. Crucial difference.
1987: Galway beat Kilkenny in one of the dullest All-Ireland hurling finals ever, played in the shits. My first ever All-Ireland final to watch on the telly. The game turns on two incidents. John Commins saves a Jarly goal attempt by Liam Fennelly. This is notable for two reasons - it’s the only recorded instance of a Jarly goal attempt in hurling being saved and also the only recorded instance of a Galway hurling goalkeeper saving a shot. A patented Noel Lane ground pull goal is the decisive score. There is another noteworthy incident when Ger Canning completely gives the game away that an Irish cyclist has won the World Professional Road Race Championship in Villach, Austria which was being shown deferred after the hurling. “And believe me you definitely don’t want to miss that, please, stay tuned, we’ve really got something special to show you.” Me oul’ fella said “oh great, Kelly must have won” but I knew Roche would win because I’m always right.
1992: A forgettable enough All-Ireland hurling between as Kilkenny beat Cork in the shits. The game is mostly notable for Brian Corcoran’s hurling bat ending up halfway up the lower tier of the Hogan Stand as he attempted to strike the ball in a monsoon and I got a great view of it perched up above the tunnel in the corner of the Canal End. My first ever All-Ireland senior inter-county final to attend. Liam McCarthy scores a goal for Kilkenny which is the only recorded instance of the person the trophy is named after scoring a goal for a team in an All-Ireland senior inter-county final.
1998: I have no memory of this day but I think it was damp and maudlin and overcast.
2009: Kilkenny 2-22 Tipperary 0-23. A maudlin, damp, overcast day.
2015: Kilkenny 1-22 Galway 0-18. A magdalen, overcast day. Nobody really counts the Galway goal that apparently happened right at the end. Galway put in a very good first half performance and one father of one of the players left his seat in the stand to burst into the Galway dressing room to start a fight, because that’s what always happens, isn’t it. Galway did not appear on the pitch for the second half.
2020: I have no memory of this day but I think it was magdalen and overcast.
2026: I have no memory of this day, despite it being on as I write it, except that it is a very magdalen, overcast, and soon to be very damp day. Nothing will happen today.

6 September 1959, a last gasp Larry Guinan goal salvages a draw for Waterford in the All Ireland Hurling Final, Waterford 1-17 Kilkenny 5-5
It was the last drawn final for 53 years and Waterford would go on to win the replay. Waterford haven’t won it in the 67 years since 1959.
1998 final Offaly v Kilkenny was played on 13 September 1998 and not on 6 September 1998. The introduction of the ‘backdoor’ in 1997 saw the final pushed back to the second Sunday in September from 1997-2002 before reverting to the first Sunday in September in 2003.
