Israel won 3-1 against Malta tonight in the first game. Benayoun got a hat-trick.

Ah lovely. I was going to ask you about everyone’s second team, Germany. How are they/we shaping up for this campaign? Any major changes to the World Cup squad? I see the coach announced that Ballack would regain the captaincy.

I expect a few more of the youngsters to play a part in this campaign - Kroos and Marin notably probably.

Ballack is out of these games with an illness. That will allow Khedira to continue alongside Schweinsteiger. He was determined to play despite not training all that much with Real, because of the threat of Ballack taking his place I suppose, and think there’s been a small falling out with Mourinho as a result.

Otherwise it’s largely the same squad - just some freshening up of the fringe players.

Friedrich and Boateng are injured so Westermann will take the central place with Jansen and Badstuber battling for the left back spot.

Marin was absolute class for Werden Bremen in Genoa last week so I look forward to watching more of him this season.

Yeah he’s a cracking player. He was quiet when he came on in the World Cup (twice I think - Australia and Serbia was it?) but he was class for Moenchengladbach a season ago. Didn’t see as much for him with Werder but think he’ll be a star. Huge things expected of Kroos too who may even be the best of that crop of players. Some amount of quality attacking midfielders to produce in the one agegroup though - Mueller/Özil/Marin/Kroos… all born within a year or so of eachother.

Rocko, what are your thoughts of Richard Sukuta-Pasu…

Turkish cunt

rocko or sukutu-pasu??

I went a bit over the top here on Rocko, apologies.

He’s spoken highly of. Haven’t seen him play but he’s at my beloved St Pauli on loan again this season so I’ll keep an eye on him for you.

Seen him flleetingly a few times and he looks a serious prospect, big strong lad with loads of pace

Shock of the night so far has to be Moldova beating Finland 2-0…Sami Hyppia sent off for the Finns

I don’t think Finland losing to anyone with a soccer team is a shock anymore.

Last night’s goals:

Here Rocko, what to fuck is going on? Why aren’t you in the pub? You can’t be serious about that bet.

Italy losing one nil in Estonia after a half hour.

Italy recovered to win 2-1.

France have been beaten by Belarus at home though.

Mixed results for our neighbours - England with a handy win over Bulgaria, Scotland drew in Lithuania but Wales beaten in Montenegro.

The occupied six won in Slovenia despite having none of the ball.

The benefits of the altitude training before and during the World Cup are paying off big time now for England.

German goal:

Sloppy defending but good pressure from Schweinsteiger and good vision from Mueller.

Portugal v Cyprus is a dinger of a game. Cyprus lead twice then fell 3-2 behind before levelling it up again and are now 4-3 down. Cyprus get themselves involved in some great games.

The French are some shambles. Had a nice punt on there being less than 2.5 goals in Vilnius, typical Scottish snorefest.
