People\'s Sunday

If that bad weather at Wimbledon continues who’d be in favour of reinstating People’s Sunday and having play on the middle Sunday for the first time in years?

I’m a traditionalist and normally I like to see the ethos of the event respected. Having said that there’s something heart-warming about the Great British public flocking to SW19 and a flurry of Union Jacks about the courts. It reminds one of the Last Night of the Proms.

Difficult balance to strike.

give in to that & next thing the players wont be wearing all white - give an inch of tradition & the modernisers take a mile

No balance at all to strike. Play until the third Monday if there’s a need. Sure most of us miss most of the thing due to work anyway, so no matter about what will probably be a one-sided final…

The Royal’s should be consulted before any such move is considered Rock. I’d like to see Cameron and Brown present a united front and accept whatever decision is made. It is too important an issue to go along old party lines.

The All England Club have held their ground and are not bowing to the modernisers. Relief for many I’d say.

Club say no to middle Sunday play

The All England Club have ruled out the possibility of play on middle Sunday at Wimbledon despite persistent drizzle delaying play today and grim weather forecasts for next week.

Despite enjoying just one fully rain-free day so far this year, chief executive Ian Ritchie said the tournament was still sufficiently on schedule not to order Sunday play for the fourth time.

Ritchie said: ‘Irrespective of the amount of play today, the middle Saturday, I can confirm that we are sufficiently on schedule and that therefore there will be no play tomorrow.’

Wimbledon have played three previous times on middle Sunday, in 1991, 1997 - when Tim Henman famously defeated Dutchman Paul Haarhuis 14-12 in the deciding set - and 2004.

Today’s start was delayed until at least 1pm with organisers hoping for better weather in the early afternoon in order for some matches in the men’s and women’s third round to get under way.
