Picking up another accent when you live abroad

Other than putting ‘lah’ at the end of every sentence, nothing has changed.

Internet rule 101

When having a pop at someone else’s English or grammar, make sure your post is free of spelling or grammar mistakes.

Epic fail.

that would happen to you in Ennis

This is correct. You should be able to moderate your speech for others to understand you without losing any of your own accent. I dislike when people pick up foreign accents and it might make them cunts.

Losing your accent is a sign of a weak personality.

Ive been away a good while now and a lot of people I meet now say they cant believe im Irish because I have an Aussie accent. I probably still use Irish phrases but defo have lost the twee oirish accent

I read up on it and basically its a sign that you have integrated successfully to your new homeland when you ditch your accent

It’s great to know you won’t be coming back after such a successful integration into the country.

A sure sign of a cunt.
I came back from the states and my mother said my Cork accent was stronger than when I left.

The Aussies often don’t think I’m irish as I speak well and slowly compared to other irish. This is probably because I slowed down for the yanks. They seem to think its pretty neutral. Irish people get m straight off the bat though as Cork. I’m glad of this as I am more of a “Cork” person than an “Irish” person.

A yank who I worked with for months thought me and another Corkonian spoke Gaelic when spoke to each other and thought we were sometimes talking about him. We were in fact slagging him to his face and he didn’t know it. We are similar to the Jamicans with our pidgeon English according to alot of yanks.

@Gman could comment in my accent
The same happened me for a while after I spent 6 months in Canada, had to slow right down so they could grasp what I was banging on about. Initially I was told I sounded like Brad Pitt in snatch…Thankfully I have recovered my full Limerick brouge, kid!

yeah I’d call @caoimhaoins accent is educated travelled corkonian. You’d know he was from Cork, but know that he isnt a backward hick like some of the cunts from there.

Only a cunt would lose their accent…

Wow, how original

I have a young lad who labour a for me the odd day from Offaly I can barely get him, it’s funny to watch the Aussies try to understand. He’d never left Ireland before coming over here!

the Irish accent is horrendous in fairness, here in Blighty I do my best to disguise it, its really guttural and savage on the ear, whenever I see and hear a few roasters from home floating around London I cringe

Great work pal. I’d hate for anyone to associate you with Ireland.

going to be some collection of roasters up in Waxy’s tomorrow for the dublin-kerry game
