Players who were "the next big thing" but never did anything (much)

Liam Cahill from tipp is one that is often forgotten about. Burst on the scene in a blaze of glory in '96 I think, but never amounted to much after. He made the fatal mistake of walking into Frank Lohan’s corner of course. The graveyard of more than a few promising forwards.

Leigh O’Brien had a limited football career???
Gway would ya.

Mick O’Leary was a mystery alright-one of the better club players around but couldn’t transfer it to county. Ken Furlong wasn’t really given the best chance I reckon.

Link, Leigh O’Brien had a very long career with Wexford. Sure, we were collectively shit for most of it but he was regularly knocking over long range frees and 45s and chipping in with points from play from wing back too. He was a very good player over that timeframe.

Ill take your word for it,i suppose his era coinciding with a low ebb in Wexford football dims my memory of him doing a whole lot.

Re Mick O’Leary. He’s probably just not quick enough for inter county but has been a very solid club defender for years. He’s had a lot of injuries - can’t remember now if it’s his cruciate that he did a couple of times or maybe he broke his leg twice or something. Fook it, someone else will have to confirm but it can’t have helped his sharpness / speed over the years.

Can’t confirm it Bandage but just wondering if you’ve considered the possibility of it being one of each injury or are you convinced it was the same one twice? Just something to think about it is all.

Kieron Dyer

Dyer was a superb player when fit. Even this season he came on for West Ham against Everton I think and totally changed the game. Awful pity.

Bob Casey

<_< :

Poor effort.

He was some player at Newcastle & had a great relationship, on the pitch, with Nobby Solano. Newcastle had some pace in the side back then when Sir Bobby was running the show - they turned over everyone at St James Park at one time or another.

There were unconfirmed rumours about Dyer & Jenas being “close” too.

Anyway. it seems West Ham are to move to have him retired on injury grounds at the end of the season so as to get their hands on the Insurance payout.

He played very well for UCC in both the Sigerson and County Championship as well if memory serves me correctly.

Paddy Wallace. Obviously he has got caps etc, but he was as highly regarded (if not even higher) than BO’D when they were U-19. They are now worlds apart.

he was on the senior county team whilst still in secondary school, played nearly 100 (if not more) games and i think is the third top scorer all time behind Scot Doran and Mattie. link should stick to hurling and fianna fail. (altho I will give him Shannon, potential to be a great player, but could never be bothered)

Shane Jennings.

Peyton Manning B)

Colts should have taken Ryan Leaf after all in that draft and not Manning…

Andy Van Der Mayde is someone who sums up this thread…looked a very good winger in the making at euro 2004 along with Arjen Robben…was part of a decent Ajaz side with Sneidjer, Van Der Vaart, Zlatan and Chivu and they had a decent run in the Champions League…Went to Inter Milan and looked to be on the way to the top but it didn’t work out, ended up failing to get into the Everton team for a finish up…Injury and booze didn’t help his cause

paul mccgraf- did decent enough at manchester when he was young but the bottle got the better of him & with his dodgy knees he ended up at a very poor villa side- i remember inter milan destroyed them & i couldnt help thinking of what might have been
