Premier League 2022/23

Arsenal’s title victories in 1989 and 1998 were not expected.

Before the 88/89 season Liverpool were clear favourites, with probably Everton and Manchester United considered second and third in no particular order.

Arsenal would have been in a group with Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest making up the 4-6 bracket of most likely lads.

Before the 1997/98 season Manchester United were clear favourites but Arsenal would have been considered behind Liverpool (who had signed Paul Ince) and possibly Newcastle or even a rising Chelsea in the pecking order.

Arsenal had an ageing back four, Paul Merson had left, Ian Wright was getting on in years, and the players who had come in were unproven in England (Overmars, Petit) or unknown (Vieira), and not a whole lot was known about the manager and how he would deal with his first full season in English football. It had a lot of the ingredients for a disappointing season.

Not panicking but officialy worried. Forest were rooted bottom from much of the season but began to find their feet and all of a sudden found themselves sitting pretty in 14th. Injuries and shit signings in January (Shelvey, Wood, Ayew) and the worst away form in any league in the world, along with other sides beginning to improve after their January changes, has Forest beginning looking like sitting ducks a little.

Home form has been superb though, only Utd have a better unbeaten stretch at home.

I think Fulham, Brentford and the Saudis are the teams you want to be playing at this stage of the season.

Aston Villa are likely to join that bracket soon, Chelsea appear to have had a mini–reawakening but how long that lasts is questionable.

Alf Ramsay played on that Spurs team you reference actually. He came up before in a question about league winners as player and manager . Surely a refined question in there about first season champions

I can see Brighton going on the beach in another couple of weeks too.

I think Forest will survive. The following 3 teams will be relegated
West Ham
Everton
Leeds

It’s Bournemouth, Forest and one other. As it has been all season. Am worried for Ammers but we just about better than most of rest down there

Everton? Not a hope. Nor the hammers. Southampton, leeds and someone else for me.

Hammers are shit. They were lucky to beat Forest 4-0

West Ham surely *too good to go down. If they win the Europa Conference League will they be in next seasons Europa League?

Bournemouth, Southampton and Leeds for me.

*This was said in 2002-03 of course when they went down with 42 points.

Leicester look like a team in freefall. Reading in the Sunday Times there today, that they’ve lost last 4 and seems to be a lot of anti Brendan Rodgers sentiment there

The players are all piss heads according to my sources on the ground.

Shur brighton is already on the beach

I was expecting @Cheasty to come back with some incredible anecdote about the beach in Brighton.

It’s full of stones and is located beside where the IRA nearly killed Thatcher.

The New York neighbourhood of the same name was/is also a notorious hotspot for Russian mafia.

Crystal Palace and Southampton both losing.

I reckon Southampton might yet get something from Brentford, so lump on Brentford.

Outstanding late drama in the battle to avoid relegation as Tottenham do a Tottenham and surrender a 3-1 lead at The Dell. A late Southampton penalty gives them a 3-3 draw and they’re still here and still fighting.

An utterly monumental six pointer in two weeks’ time as the Hammers play the Saints.

Leeds gain revenge for Wolves buggering them in 1972 with a big win at Molineux.

Leicester took a point at Brentford and Bournemouth lost at Villa Park. Bournemouth have a nice looking fixture at home to Fulham next day out however.

Right now you would not want to be Everton or Nottingham Forest. Or West Ham. And you wouldn’t want to be Bournemouth or Southampton either. And who would would want to be a sinking Wolves or managerless Crystal Palace? And even though Leeds and Leicester took points today, do you want to be them? I don’t think so.

I expect Chelsea will knock four or five past Everton in the evening game.

That’s an outstanding round up. I’d pay to read it.

You can still pay if you like. I’ve left you my bank account details on a PM there.

A big 2 points lost late on for Conte’s Spurs
It really does seem logical to move him on as soon as possible, it’s clearly all over
