Prepare to welcome your new IMF overlords

I’m not for one minute suggesting that there are enough jobs in farming or that it will solve our problems only that it there and that it may be a start in a recovery

If you’re interested there are a crowd in mayo that pretty much lead the world with their combi unit here is the link if you interested

It shouldn’t be lost on anyone that the economic model we have adopted means a crash like this one will happen every 20 years, with a recovery period of 10 years or so with 5-10 years of ‘boom’ following. If we keep going the way we have done we’ll be out of this hole by 2020, back to the good times by 2030, and by 2040 we’ll be firmly back in this hole again. Will be interesting to see if these budgets which will finally bring home the depth of the crisis, change anything about how people want our society to work. I don’t see it personally.

We have a minster for agriculture and an entire department with a shit load of bureaucrats send a few of them over althought don’t you might be as well off to gather up few lads drom various marts to plamause the chinese

Just for Lazarus I’ll post this quote from Chomsky - “Unlimited economic growth has the marvelous quality of stilling discontent while maintaining privilege, a fact that has not gone unnoticed among liberal economists.”

I don’t know pretend to know much about agriculture but it seems this is another area where Europe does not benefit Ireland? Fisheries also?

Fishing is a massive one as well. Before there were exemption points.Member States had to extend the rights to marine resources from 12 to 200 miles from their coasts in what was known as the common fisheries policy.Thats fine if your a country like switzerland but as an island nation its like having gold in your back garden and told you can never dig for it.

Is that ‘light touch’ the same as the ‘soft landing’ I heard about a few years ago?

Yours wrapped up in cotton wool,

Has anyone read any of the policy ideas outlined on Labour’s site? Have they made any reference to political reform?

Alan Joyce has performed some necessary cost cutting at Qantas but time will tell if he can truly turn it around. The high A$ isnt great for tourism and while moving more into Asia is necessary they will do well to compete on a cost basis there. I get the feeling he was brought in like many CEO’s in the last few years to do a hatchet job on the company’s cost base. Strategically I think there is the danger of falling between two stools with their low cost Jetstar operation and the main Qantas banner with the free papers and food. Their control of the airports in Oz isn’t what it was. Players like Tiger if they up their game at all could make serious inroads.

There is so much Ireland could do we are what a five hour flight in either direction to New York and Moscow. So many of our young people go on to further education and have great IT literacy, English speaking but not British etc. But we fucked away billions of EU structural funds, our system of government is fundamentally broken and the people will be paying for the mistakes of 4 corrupt private enterprises for the foreseeable future. It is a long road back now whatever the IMF decide to do. Not so long ago we were preaching to others, the smoking ban copied all over etc etc. Very sad to see

Agreed, but in some areas this is actually happening. We’re never going to be a heavy industry producer of tractors etc but Dairymaster is absolutely flying it, shipping milking machines to Russia and China.
As an aside the agricultural policies of the EU are a thundering disgrace, just pick one area like say these frankly bizarre entitlements or single farm payments. You have the EU thinking it’s a fantastic idea to give a sum like say 75k a year to a ‘farmer’ because he slaughtered 300 cattle in year zero. Never mind that he probably didn’t own any of them for more than a few weeks because he’s a cattle dealer ffs. What has he done to deserve this? Absolutely nothing yet he’s given a huge sum of money for nothing. It’s sickening to see. It’s ridiculous enough farmers getting direct payments without speculators getting massive amounts because of a huge flaw in the system. All these subsidies should be stopped forthwith and the money offered as grants or farm loans only. Farmers would be alot better off if they could simply be guaranteed a fair price for goods instead of all this nonsense.

Absolutely. Essentially from what I can see, a corrupted political system has allowed a handfull of individuals and companies to utterly fuck up the entire country. Whether that system is allowed to continue or not is the big question now.

BONDWATCH

An initial dip to 7.7 (cheered to the rafters on RTE) is followed by a rise to 7.9, we’re goosed.

But does the price of the bonds even matter at the moment?
There is little or no trading on them.

Yes the policitical system is corrupted but the people of the country have to take responsibility for that by electing these guys to government. Just look at Healy Rae at the moment, he has the government over a barrell and he wants a by-pass and a hospital built in Kenmare, when the HSE is shutting down hospitals all over the place, before he will support the government and I see Lowry has got planning permission to build Lowryland in Tipp, I wonder was his vote bought. Dont get me started on Bertie the cunt.

Until folks start copping on all over Ireland and start voting based on national interests rather than local, they should be left to the local elections, then we are never going to move forward. To help move forward as I said earlier I think FG need to change their name to try get rid of this civil war politics crap, yes it will take a generation or so but it would help move it on. U

Probably not but it does tell us just how much in the shit we are at this time.

Exactly. Just shows the lack of confidence externally in our ability to drag ourselvea out of the mire. Its a useful indicator in that regard at the present time.

Hmmm? I wonder?

What an absolutely ridiculous project.

Same with healy-rae as well. fucking disgrace.

Max Keiser is a fucking legend. Starts talking about Ireland at about 7:00. David McWilliams is interviewed about halfway through.
