There was the odd charm of Richard Whiteley, testing yourself at the numbers game was always a pleasure, Carol Vorderman always looked radiant and there was always a chance that a rude word would unintentionally come up during the letters game.
In recent years, however, Countdown has undergone a bit of a revamp and has now become, if not quite essential viewing, a bit of a cult classic. The wonderful Jeff Stelling is now in Whiteley’s chair, Susie Dent continues to get better and more mature looking in Dictionary Corner and some of the guests, Rory McGrath for example, have been genuinely funny and engaging, unlike some of the unbearable morons they used to wheel out.
Even footballers, such as Burnley’s Clarke Carlisle are trying their hand at it which can’t have done the programme’s image any harm. Indeed, Countdown was so popular during Carlisle’s term on the show that some websites had a dedicated tracker following his every move live.
The big hole (stop laughing at the back) left by Vorderman’s departure has also been filled and quite impressively too, by 24 year old Rachel Riley, an Oxford maths graduate with no prior television experience.
After a difficult bedding in period where she attracted the ire of fans no doubt pining for Carol like Father Dougal used to in his sleep, Rachel has grown into her role and now looks completely at ease in front of the camera.
Aesthetically, Rachel is very easy on the eye, her background as a football and netball player no doubt contributing to her athletic shape. Her legs seem to go on forever and her choice of body hugging outfits do wonders for her figure. She even has her own dedicated fan site My link and numerous pictures of her have surfaced on the internet in front of the letters board with phrases such as ‘corrr’ and ‘nicearse’ in the background.
She enjoys good banter with Stelling, Susie Dent and company and male guests seem to go weak at the knees when she cheerily responds to all of their requests. It’s a given that she’s good with numbers but she’s a dab hand with the letters as well, as she displayed to the delight of all male viewers last year when she came up with the eight word corker, ‘horniest’.
Even better, her inspiration for the word was simple: “It just came into my head”, she said. We understand Rachel; it must be just constantly on the mind. Sounds like our kind of girl.
Rachel fans will also be happy to hear that she is back on the market having split from her long term boyfriend late last year. Working out how to get a girl like Rachel is the type of conundrum we’d like to take on…just give us a bit longer than thirty seconds.

Do they have some kind of computer programme that does the numbers game and gives the answer to Rachel? Because if they don’t, then she is freakishly good at them. I know that’s not entirely the point of this thread but still, you’ve gotta be impressed by a girl that is that good at sums.
