Re: What are you currently listening to?

She did stay there a while farmer but I don’t know where she went as I went home to watch the cricket.

I’m now listening to Ricer while enjoying some quality test match cricket. Giles just dropped Ponting. I can’t believe he dropped Ponting. Rootless Tree is immense I have now concluded. Not sure about the album as a whole though.

Found this Grooze Armada CD lying around at home. It was one of those freebes from the Guardian but its actually a quality CD.

Anyone else got any good free CDs with a newpaper? Always figured they’d be shite so don’t even check them out.

Got a great free CD when I bought some music in Virgin in the US a few years ago. Was called the best of British and had a big union jack on the front cover so I doubt it ever made it to their irish store. Had classic songs such as the who’s Baba O’Riley, Cat Stevens Wild World, Peter Gabriels Solsbury Hill and Peter Framptons Baby I love your way. Absolutely superb stuff and another 10 tracks that were pretty good too. Going to root that CD out and put it in my CD player for the week. Quality stuff. Nice to get a mixture of different artists too.

There used to be some decent free CDs with Hot Press back in the day. One called Esso - The Speed of Sound was, I guess, sponsored by Esso but it had some quality tracks on it like Dust by Addict and an acoustic Same Size Feet by the Stereophonics before they made it big.

Uncut’s Best of the Year generally does what it says on the tin. Last year’s (2005) was superb. Arcade Fire’s ‘Laika’, Antony and the Johnsons’ ‘My Lady’s Story’, Hal’s ‘I Sat Down’, Franz Ferdinand’s ‘Eleanor Put Your Boots On’ plus the latest from John Cale, Robert Plant and others. It, itself, actually was the album of the year.

I remember a smashing CD in the dreaded Sunday Independent that had all those classics that you cant be arsed buying. Stand by Me, Lean on Me, More than a Feeling. Another CD of music soundtracks had San Francisco and Unchained Melody. Think that they have done away with it now and gone for rubbish like the Best of Chris de Burgh.

Remember specifically buying Ireland on Sunday to get my hands on ‘All I have to do is Dream’ by the Everly Brothers. Found Annie’s Song by John Denver on it as well. Its so sugary it rots your teeth but its a classic

Remember hearing Waterbugs by the Flaming Lips on one of those free CDs with the NME as well - havent been able to find it since

you are all a bunch of idiots who listen to sh1t music. is there an award to the person who listens to the most obscure crap possible.

is nobody listening to mainstream these days? i got shania twain’s new album.

“Man i feel like a woman, bap bap a da da-dap dap”

I’ve never bought a Sunday Independent or an Ireland on Sunday and on principle I would never buy a newspaper because of the CD that comes with it. So much crap on them that’s freely available elsewhere.

Lighten up

Ah lighten yourself up. This the Flaming Lips song you’re referring to???:

Threw the Killers Sam’s town and Director We thrive on Big Cities on the creative over the weekend. Both good albumns. The Killers Albumn especially is a real grower.
Also bought Dave Fannings fab 50 Vol 2, haven’t really listened to it yet but there seems to be a few good songs on it.

Gave ‘River’ by Joni Mitchell a blast this morning - quality

Also listened to my customary Will Oldham and Brian Eno numbers on the way in

Big into LCD Soundsystem’s album from last year - anyone concur?

Dying to hear ‘Speed to my Side’ by Rollarskate Skinny but I have mislaid the CD

So you recommend Director’s album then jack? I want to buy that and the debut albums from a few other up and coming Irish bands like The Blizzards, The Crimea and one other whose name escapes me. Director’s manager drinks in my local so they get decent airplay on the jukebox. I haven’t got it yet either but a few people have highly recommended the debut album of a young Wicklow chap called Fionn Regan to me. Can’t recall what’s it’s called though (his uncle drinks in the 51 too!).

Today on my travels I listened to my albums of the year - Two Gallants, Josh Ritter and We Are Scientists. Excellent stuff.

Haven’t thought much of what I heard of Director so far - they’re fellow Fingallians though so I’m prepared to give them a chance. Their website address is .co.uk which is extremely annoying though.

Heartworm by Whipping Boy at the moment. Scarily good, a timeless classic.

Was listening to the best of Nat King Cole this morning - he is up there with Kelly and Orbison as having the best voice ever. It almost has a central heating glow - it is so warm

Particular favourites:

  • When I Fall in Love
  • Nature Boy
  • The Christmas Song

I’ve been listening to The Cake Sale album over the last few days. Some excellent tunes and it’s for charity too. Liking Some Surprise written by Paul from BellX1 and sung by Gary from Snow Patrol and Lisa Hannigan, Black Winged Bird written by Emm Gryner and sung by Nina from The Cardigans and Aliens (class) written by Matt Lunson and sung by Neil Hannon.

I see you mention The Blizzards there Bandage, you may have known the lead singer Bresy during a previous life. Cojak certainly did - or let on to. Ex Leinster panelist.

I knew he was the guy who used to play for Leinster.

Should I know him from somewhere else?

Been listening to If I Should Fall From Grace With God for the last few weeks mainly for Fairytale of New York because of the time of year that’s in it but the whole album is a thing of genius. Thousands Are Sailing is the stand out; the lyrics are phenomenal as is MacGowan’s delivery and the playing of the band. One of the greatest songs I have ever heard.

Shane MacGowan and The Pogues

Thousands Are Sailing

The island it is silent now
But the ghosts still haunt the waves
And the torch lights up a famished man
Who fortune could not save

Did you work upon the railroad
Did you rid the streets of crime
Were your dollars from the white house
Were they from the five and dime

Did the old songs taunt or cheer you
And did they still make you cry
Did you count the months and years
Or did your teardrops quickly dry

Ah, no, says he, 'twas not to be
On a coffin ship I came here
And I never even got so far
That they could change my name

Thousands are sailing
Across the western ocean
To a land of opportunity
That some of them will never see
Fortune prevailing
Across the western ocean
Their bellies full
Their spirits free
They’ll break the chains of poverty
And they’ll dance

In Manhattan’s desert twilight
In the death of afternoon
We stepped hand in hand on Broadway
Like the first man on the moon

And “The Blackbird” broke the silence
As you whistled it so sweet
And in Brendan Behan’s footsteps
I danced up and down the street

Then we said goodnight to Broadway
Giving it our best regards
Tipped our hats to Mister Cohen
Dear old Times Square’s favorite bard

Then we raised a glass to JFK
And a dozen more besides
When I got back to my empty room
I suppose I must have cried

Thousands are sailing
Again across the ocean
Where the hand of opportunity
Draws tickets in a lottery
Postcards we’re mailing
Of sky-blue skies and oceans
From rooms the daylight never sees
Where lights don’t glow on Christmas trees
But we dance to the music
And we dance

Thousands are sailing
Across the western ocean
Where the hand of opportunity
Draws tickets in a lottery
Where e’er we go, we celebrate
The land that makes us refugees
From fear of Priests with empty plates
From guilt and weeping effigies
And we dance

Have shared this with a few people already but Midlake’s ‘The trials of Van Occupanther’ is the ‘Funeral’ of 2006. Superb stuff

Found an Art Garfunkel CD at home over the Christmas. Immediately looked for a song called ‘Bright Eyes’ which I heard on Channel 4s greatest kids show countdown - it is the theme tune of some cartoon back in the early 80s. Found it and was hugely impressed
