Re: What are you currently listening to?

Chelsea Dagger is class.

Really like “Last night I almost died” as well, that’s Duke Special too, right?

That’s Duke Special alright.

Like that Aztec Camera one. 1990 and it could apply to today.

Aztec Camera sang ‘Somewhere in my Heart’ yeah?

One of those cheesey 80s numbers that’s good to hear every now and again

Indeedy they did. Hard to believe, especially when you compare it with Good Morning Britain

Neon Bible - Arcade Fire’s new album - any thoughts?

Not hugely impressed myself. That said I have only really listened to it once. It’s a bad sign that they have to put ‘No Cars Go’ on there seeing that it was on their debut EP. There are some good moments but not blown away to the same extent as I was when I heard ‘Funeral’

Loving Neutral Milk Hotel’s ‘In the Aeroplane Over the Sea’ at the moment

Youtube is great for listening to all those great chart numbers over the years that you don’t own on CD
eg

Stay on these Roads - A-Ha (only good thing to come out of Norway apart from any planes leaving the place)
White Town - Your Woman
Mmm Mmm Mmm - Crash Test Dummies
Popular - Nada Surf
Wuthering Heights - Kate Bush
Dancing Queen - Abba
Would I lie to You? - Charles and Eddie

Did somebody call me a ‘musical snob’?

Have only given Neon Bible one listen while I was doing other stuff so will reserve judgement for now.

Intervention and Windowsill immediately hit me as superb songs though.

Right, listened to this a load of times now. I think it’s incredible.

I also totally reject the point about ‘No Cars Go’. I think most bands in history store songs. They might have felt it didn’t fit in with the theme of the debut album for example. Whatever you say about Arcade Fire implying they’re suffering from a lack of inspiration, imagination or whatever and relying on recycling material doesn’t wash with me sir!

One of the most original, ground-breaking and unique bands I’ve heard in years.

Love the Canadian Cooonts.

Don’t really like Arcade Fire but I notice Mrs Rock is a big fan and she’s well impressed with the new album from the few listens she’s given it so far.

It’s nice to see you ‘notice’ that mrs rock is a fan.

steamboatsam told me relationships are all about communication when he was going out with that Bulgarian bird that dumped him at Christmas.

They’re actually Americans living in Canada

Yes most bands in history store songs - many of the songs from In Utero were songs not considered suitable for Nevermind. The diffference here is that Nirvana never put these songs on an album before In Utero

Think I debated this ages ago with whyohwhy re Lucky from Radiohead. It was included on the War Child album and then subsequently on OK Computer. It is a trick that you use to draw in the fan to a familiar song so that they buy the album

At least War Child wasn’t a Radiohead album. In Arcade Fire’s case its unforgiveable. Its the equivalent of Whipping Boy putting ‘Snow’ on Heartworm

I beg to differ on the first point re nationality.

And don’t be ridiculous with your use of the word ‘unforgiveable’ you drama queen.

They were formed in Canada but they are Americans - from Texas I think. You called them Canadians. At least the Butlers are anyway. Win’s missus, Regine, is French

I may have been overdramatic with my point but it is valid and beats yours out the door

Regine is from Haiti. Hence the song Haiti on the first album. Win is from the USA but the rest of the 7 piece band are Canadian. They were formed in Canada and worked and were based there so I called them Canadian.

Your point is rubbish. Look, if your brother gave you that album to listen to on tape or vinyl you’d be riding it. It appears you were really impressed by their debut one from early 2005 but they were quite underground back then. I think their live show at Electric Picnic that summer blew people away and they’ve won ‘mainstream’ popularity over here.

I know you don’t like this. They sold out 2 shows in the Olympia in less than a minute on line. You must have been gutted. ‘Why must everybody else like them now?’ you probably cried to yourself. You need to find a reason to turn against them so after one listen to their next album you conclude that they lack credibility because 1 of the 11 songs was on an EP before. You think this is unforgiveable? Give me a fooking break.

Musicians by nature will have hundreds of songs built up and release them as and when they like. I mentioned theme earlier. That’s one of the reasons why they might have held it back from the first album. Maybe they weren’t happy with their initial recorded attempts at the song? Maybe they couldn’t capture the magic of the song played live on record in 2005? Maybe they tweaked the arrangements around and reworked it a little and they’re pleased with the results now?

Christ, I’ve seen and read about musicians releasing stuff they wrote as teenagers years later. There simply is no issue here other than your being melodramatic and seemingly feeling the need to chastise something because it’s popular.

Snob.

Farmer in your top 5 Irish albums of all time you included The Lonesome Touch by Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill. It gives me great pleasure to point out that John Naughton’s Reel on that album had previously appeared on Martin Hayes’ eponymous debut release. Unforgiveable.

According to farmer to release anything that’s ever been released before is unforgiveable.

I’ve heard Dylan cover All Along The Watchtower for example. What a fooking joke that guy is.

Your ‘reasoning’ is complete rubbish.

I’m off to find work but if you’re back later I’ll deal with you!!!

Right.

On the topic of the nationality of the band - Win Butler is from America. He, along with Regine (from Haiti -well done), are the musical force behind Arcade Fire. So to call the band Canadian is wrong. Will Butler, Win’s brother is also in the band. Are you telling me that he is Canadian and his brother is American?

As for your theory of me being against the inclusion of ‘No Cars Go’ on the grounds that Arcade Fire have become too popular, I don’t think that I even going to address it - it is that ridiculous. Is it or is it not the same version of the song from the debut EP? Why include it if it is?

As for Rock’s Martin Hayes point - if you listened to him you would know that the two songs are completely different. Don’t ask me why they are called the same but they are. So don’t make random points with no back-up. There are also two completely different versions of The Foggy Dew for instance

Farmer I shall investigate that point later - I hope you’re not confusing John Naughton’s Reel with John Naughton’s jig though: both of which appear on The Lonesome Touch.

First things first

Dylan wrote that song it’s his, Hendrix covered it and made it better, Dylan said so himself.

On the subject of Arcade Fire and what nationality the band is. It got me thinking about Thin lizzy.

Phil Lynott

Brian Downey

Eric Bell

Brian Robertson

Gary Moore

Snowy White

What Nationality is this band???
One Irish guy out of this bunch

Win and Will are American, Regine is from Haiti while Richard Parry, Tim Kingsbury, Sarah Neufeld and Jeremy Gara are all Canadian. That’s 4 Canadians.

They met in Canada. They formed in Canada. They live in Canada. They continued to hold down full time jobs in Canada after the initial release of the debut album. Their promotional material, their record company and their own website classifies them as a Canadian band.

I really don’t know why you feel the need to try correct me on this (twice) when you are in fact wrong. Not that I care that much where they’re from but I detect a smug tone in your posts so I feel the need to reply.

I still can’t rationalise your initial ‘unforgiveable’ comment which I find truly bizarre and laughable.

My mp3 player is broken so I can’t listen to the EP version of No Cars Go to give a detailed comparison of both verisons at the moment and dissect them for you but from a quick google check the album version is 30 seconds shorter which would suggest they have amended the original version.

Again, maybe they did or maybe they didn’t? Even if there was no changes to it and they thought ‘fook, this is a belting tune and deserves to be on an album’ I don’t think anybody, other than music snobs, would take issue with this.

Perhaps you should get in touch with Neil Hannon, Arcade Fire and others to advise them on how to balance musical credibility and critical acclaim with comercial success and record sales?

Snob.

Get your brother to stick it on a tape for you Farmer. That appears to make things more acceptable for you.
