Tonight’s offering was memorable in that for the 2nd year in a row the frequently maligned Noel Lane, in his by now customary 19 jersey, wrapped up the quest for Liam McCarthy with another display of predatorial skill……
Noel, once again single handedly, stroked* home the telling goal….

He was a player of his era, looked like your elderly uncle but always seemed to get important scores, I thought he was a cult hero

Maligned might be overstretching but it was clear that his best days were behind him and had he not provided those goals the cry would have been ‘Lane FFS’ …. Now he’s a legend (in Ballinderreen at least)
I worked with a chap in the UK, nearly 20 years ago now, who was in the army in Northern Ireland in the early 00s. Very different then to the 80s obviously, but he used to talk about how they loved cruising around Belfast in their civilian clothes with their 9mm pistols on them. Was also clear from his stories that he really didn’t understand anything about the conflict at all. He would have been the same age as the 2 soldiers who were killed, and it would be very easy to imagine him doing something as stupid as that. Full of bravado, and with no sense that anyting would actually happen to them until it did.

Wasn’t there something about the lads in the car flashing their guns or saying they were British Army assuming people would get out of their way?

I enjoyed this celebrity spot part deux from 1992 even if I might be quite close to the person who wrote it, some (not me) would say so close that it might even be the same person. The poster forgot to write that Ahern and Tunney were standing directly beside them on the wet concrete benches and that Tunney’s facial expression would have been much better described as a scowl which included at least one and probably more pieces of scowlish sideways eye contact.
Not many people would remember the name of the Dublin left corner forward who scored a left footed goal with a sacar style strike after about 10 seconds. Anyway it was Podrick Doherty, who may have been related to Sean.
Was it Scrap Saturday or Navan Man that used to refer to himmas “Biddy Tunney, the pride of the Dail” ?

I was watching a documentary a few days ago which claimed that the ammunition Stone used in that attack had come from Ulster Resistance, a group that Paisley had endorsed.
The gun they took off one of the 2 soldiers at the following funeral was used in a few killings by the IRA as well.
Endorsed is a very gentle term to use there. Further names to be added, that are still around and showing little signs of leaving their old ways behind them, are Nigel Dodds and Jim Allister
