As Christy Ring said in his day there was no such thing as retirement. The county team was disbanded at the end of each year and at the start of each new year, the county board invited a panel of players in to represent the county for the forthcoming year. Christy never actually retired. He was just considered surplus to requirements at the age of 42 in 1962 even though he felt he had plenty still to offer to Cork

Conor O’Brien was a game bit of stuff but an average IC player nonetheless so this public statement of his retirement ( probably told he wasn’t gonna be part of the plans next year as not getting a jersey in the AI Final displayed ) is fairly hilarious.

Best of luck to him though, takes some commitment to stick at it at this level without ever really getting a sustained run in the team. Most people already knew that though.
