Road to Superbowl XLV

the new overtime rules kick into gear now for the playoffs. no more sudden death, bith teams will get posession of the ball. will make it interesting should a game finish level, which in the eagles packers could well be. Iā€™d expect the Saints, Colts and Ravens to win their games comfortably, but whilst expecting the eagles to win theirs, it could be a close one.

I thought the rule was both teams only get a possesion if a FG is scored first, if the team that gets possession first scores a TD the game is over right?

yeah youā€™re right. they have it explained really arse ways on the nfl site there. best bet is to receive the kick off and run it back for a touchdown so!

espn explains it better here:

The game does not end if the team that receives the opening kickoff makes a field goal on its initial possession. But the game is over if the team that receives the opening kickoff scores a touchdown on its initial possession.
Each team must have the opportunity to possess the ball ā€“ unless a touchdown is scored on the opening drive. Note that an ā€œopportunity to possessā€ would include instances of onside kicks and fumbled kickoffs or punts.
If the team that kicks off first ties the game with a field goal on its next possession, then the game becomes a true sudden-death affair. The next team to score will win.
A defensive touchdown on the first possession would end the game automatically.
There will be no coaching challenges. All video reviews will be initiated by the replay assistant.

Jeff Reinebold is back in studio. I fucking love that man.

is there gridiron tonight???

yup, first 2 games of playoffs. the saints seahawks game could be shite though. the jets and colts at half one or wheenever it starts should be good. ravens and chiefs tomorrow at 6, and then eagles and packers at 9

good stuff, presume the Saints v seahawks is on shortly, should be a facile enough win for the saintsā€¦Good days entertainment tomorrow with the FA Cup, AC V Udinese, the Darts and the Gridiron playoffsā€¦

Always nice to see Lawyer Milloy. Legend.

Wow. That really was a beautiful play there with the double movement by the receiver and the floated pass by Hasselbeck.

17-14 to the Saints; very entertaining so far.

This is looking like itā€™s gonna be a good game. I had my doubts but good stuff so far.

would any astute observers care to venture their opinion on the standard on display thus far?

The defenses would want to sharpen up a bit, the TDs so far have been walked in.

New Orleans are a pale shadow of last yearā€™s winners.
No more Mike Bell. Pierre Thomas and chris ivory on IR.
If you need to rely on Julius Jones you know you are in trouble.

Their pass defense is much worse than last year as well.

Seahawks are playing like they should I.e. A team with nothing to lose. Worst team ever in the playoffs yeah? Arizona had that hung around their necks the last couple of years too. Come gametime they would be a hard out.
