RTÉ Saturday/Sunday Sport

Greg Allen reporting from the National Basketball Arena to round off Sunday Sport.

cc @mickee321.

This bump prompted me to go and look for the original clip that had been lost from the first post but I’ve now reinstated it there (and here).

  • Tony O’Donoghue calls full-time 2-2 in Man City v Watford
  • Tony corrects himself because it’s not yet full-time
  • A strange aside about Rochdale
  • Darragh Maloney mentions that Alex Pearce is playing for Reading and he now plays international football for… (Darragh isn’t quite confident enough in the answer to actually finish this sentence so just lets us know he was booked).
  • Tony is asked for an update on the FA Cup but doesn’t have one.
  • Des tells us Adam Rooney has scored for Aberdeen. This is greeted with silence so Des asks if anyone knows who he is. Darragh’s guess is “his brother” (presumably Wayne’s) but Des says no and then Tony confirms he doesn’t know him either.
  • Des is clearly running out of confidence at this stage so doesn’t actually tell anyone who Adam Rooney is and Tony rescues the situation by just giving out another score.

Ah Jaysus that’s very good, TOD sounds quite different which is odd,
Love how Darragh starts to tell us that Alex Pearce now plays his international football for… before bottling it cause he’s not sure,
Then the conversation around Adam Rooney is brilliant, the lads are like a few on here, afraid to make a mistake that will be seized on

Was listening to Radio One on the way back from a match today.

That Bernard Flynn is tough to listen to. He was covering Roscommon - Meath with Adrian Eames, who seems to be a decent fella.

Anyway Roscommon were four or five points up and Flynn was putting the boot into his own county. “There’s a lack of leadership and a lack of desire and intensity” he bellowed. He usually shouts rather than speaking, the excitable cunt.

Low and behold it cuts back to him a few minutes later after a brief return to the studio and a tour around the grounds for updates. Meath are now level and then go ahead. Flynn - “this is incredible from Meath, they’ve shown so much desire and commitment to storm back into this. Roscommon are shell shocked and have no answer.”

Was delighted when the sheepstealers mugged them off with an equalising penalty with the last kick of the game.

Tipp distraught after losing that.

Brian Carthy pursuing a bizarre line of questioning of Westmeath’s Boidou Seyah here asking him if racism is acceptable if it’s “in the heat of the moment?”

Is he accusing Boidu of being a racist?

It’s a P45! A P45 for Brian!!

McBennett is planning a fair clear out in RTÉ

Pack your fucking bags Dessie

You served at RTE a long time didnt you Brian? You must be very disappointed at these developments. Is it fair to say you are very disappointed?

Mickey Harte will pray for him

McBennett is some clown. These fellas like Brolly and Carthy are absolute institutions.

This new breed of pundits and commentators haven’t a clue.

I can’t wait for the double tap to Dessie’s career

Brolly fairly laid into McBennett at the Eir launch the other day.

Said McBennett has started some WhatsApp group for The Sunday Game pundits, they were being encouraged what clips to review, what to say etc.

Carthy was atrocious but he was part of the furniture in RTE. He was never the main commentator so was never half as annoying as someone like Canning.

“The right footed kick by Dessie Dolan. And the point by Dessie Dolan!”

Carthy brought a great comfort when listening in the car.

Brolly, Spillane and O’Rourke should do all live games. Put Whelan and O’Se on the night show, Carney and McStay on commentary and forget the rest.

Dessie Dolan, Gooch, Cavanagh, should be discarded. They’ll probably bring in Berno and Andy Moran this year. Christ Almighty.

McConville was excellent as co-commentator last year, I hope they see that and give him the big games

This thing of bringing in current players as occasional pundits is a disaster too. They’ll never say anything remotely controversial.

“Yeah, it doesn’t look good on the replay there but he’s not that type of player. I’d like to be given the benefit of the doubt if it was me in that scenario, I suppose.”

Bland, bland, bland. Brolly is going to be a colossal loss. More PC merchants like Brogan & Moran on the way.

That droll Nordie accent is difficult to tolerate, though.
