Half the odds off Japan beating South Africa.

Was USA beating England as big a shock at the time?

What odds were North Korea?

That was a very big shock as well. So was Cameroon beating Argentina in 1990

I remember it like it was only 20 years ago.

I remember it well. Philip Greene was literally speechless on the radio.

Japan beating South Africa is one of the greatest shocks in team sport.

Were Germany reigning world champions?

Not as big as Japan beating South Africa.

Sure Japan would have been in the top 12 teams in the World and South Africa would have been around 5th or 6th I’d say. That wouldn’t be remotely near a shock in soccer. Teams ranked 30th or below have beaten teams in the top ten regularly enough in the soccer World Cup. It’s just not as much of a shock because soccer is actually a competitive sport played seriously in more than a handful of countries

He was brought on a tour as an assistant coach for Ireland at one stage I believe so would have some bit of insight. Can’t see it being all that much to use against us tho

Senegal beating France in 2002 was a big shock. Reigning World Champions didn’t make it out of their group. Would never happen in rubby

I got slaughtered for saying that the other day - Fagan nearly killed me.

South Africa had lost all of their games in the 2015 Rugby Championship including a first ever loss to Argentina. It would only have been a huge shock to people who don’t really follow rugby closely. Me, I was mildly surprised.
