No much media coverage yesterday of the Russian war with Georgia in Souh Ossettia. 1,500 killed yesterday in heavy fighting. Time to choose sides I think.
Normally I’d side agains the bullies and go for Georgia but Souh Ossettia was autonomous for a while now before Georgia decided they wanted to take it back by force. Plenty of discrimination and violence against Russians in Georgia so not surprising they got support from Moscow.
Has the potential to be a big war but you have to think Russia will just go for all out carnage.
The pipeline that runs through Georgia is the only connection between Europe and the mineral rich areas around the Caspian sea. A proper war in the region could have serious effects for Europe.
Bush has announced he is sending troops and aid to Georgia and has warned the Ruskis not to get his way.
Things could get very interesting out there yet.
The outside world face a tough desicion in relation to this, does the world appease Putin with peaceful treaties or do they use tough words (eventually actions) like George Bush and plan to get troops involved. Appeasement was the biggest cock up of the early 20th century for dealing with Hitler, but is Putin as bad as Hitler? It’s a hard one to call in my opinion.
Ken Early of all people had a funny quote on Off The Ball earlier.
‘If Frank Lampard can negotiate a 5-year 150k per week deal then he should be sent to Georgia to negotiate a solution over there too.’
I feel a bit guilty because I haven’t really been following this too closely. I started to read several reports over the last week or so but the ridiculously spelt and pronunced place names put me off as I was going along and I lost interest.
Are you for real? I don’t like Putin but wondering if he’s as bad as Hitler is pure thick.
Georgia were every bit as aggressive as Russia in the build-up to this conflict. They were in breach of the fragile state of peace by looking to strengthen their grip on South Ossetia and the Russians reacted to that. No doub Russia has strategic interests in the place but it also has an awful lot of ethnic Russians living there who’ve been ostracized and victimised by the Georgians. And all this supported by NATO who want to build up alliances in the area to keep the Russians in check.
