I don’t know much about it but has there not been a big turnover in players and has Kenny not used a lot of players? Were we not absolute dogshit there at the end under O’Neill, and not much better under Mick? And was the team a bit of a dad’s army before Kenny took over?
Staunton had a better record than Spock has
I think it is a bit of fuzzy logic to dismiss Switzerland their results as average and then class Portugal as top class. Portugal were pretty average in this campaign by their previous standards and seemed to carry a hangover off the back of the Euros. They played their second string side in Dublin with eyes very much on their home match v Serbia a few days later, think they made 9 or 10 changes for the Serbia match.
They were the definition of functional when winning the 2016 Euros and despite them having a far better squad now than 6 years ago were eliminated by Uruguay and Belgium in the last 16 of the last two major tournaments.
That’s not true. They have always been a team based on good technical ability
Every single other manager thats ever managed Ireland over 10 times has. He is the worst, statistically, by far. Eoin Hand is next at 28% won then stan. Martin oneill record wasnt much better than stan
Id agree with the middle bit of what bandage said. It’s more your weird contention that other managers were shit, particularly o neill That irks me.
Beating germany in qualifying, winning a must win away game in qualifying in wales, beating italy in a tournament O Neill had smashing results and was an excellent manager but it ended terribly cos the meejya didnt like him. You shit on the above but trumpet Azerbaijan? Italy doesnt count but Azerbaijan does? Its bizarre.
Did it not end terribly because it had gone terrible? The whole thing had gone tits up for O’Neill and he had this mad toxic relationship with the media on top of it wasn’t it?
Don’t let the door hit you on the way out Glas.
Very small minded attitude. No wonder you can’t appreciate what Kenny is doing.
The FAI fucked up and gave O’Neill a big contract in 2018 when it was clear they weren’t making progress and it was gone wrong.
As in his reign was terrible? Or his last few months? His reign was pretty good and includes some of the best results in irish history. Spock’s results have been pretty terrible, as all acknowledge except @Breaking_my_ballshop. No two ways about it. But there have been glimmers of good play. I’d keep him definitely. But ignoring every bad thing and trumpeting his brilliance because of possible potential is bizarre. And doing down ONeill, Trap and Mick as failures when they qualified for things is just stupid.
Every Irish manager seems to stay on a campaign too long. Inevitably ends badly.
Just about to post similar. They seem to be deemed a failure then.
The two who aren’t are Jackie and Brian Kerr. Whatever way you cook it, Kerr was absolutely shafted
At the end of the day, Kenny would not be in the conversation for any half decent club job.
He’s just not a good manager.
Whatever way you cook it, Kerr was absolutely shafted
He was not. He had the 2002 generation at their peak and failed miserably with them.
All about the timing.
If he’d left after the Euros he’d be canonised. Even the subsequent World Cup campaign had some great moments, beating Wales away etc.
That last Nations League campaign was horrendous though. It was all over by then.
Overall MON did a very good job. That Bosnia second leg to secure qualification was a great night.
The players wanted rid of Kerr, rightly or wrongly once that’s the case it is time to move on - it is for the same reason I think Kenny deserves the Euro campaign to see can he make a fist of it as it seems as though the players still have faith in him and are positive about him. But given how low the barrier for entry is to the Euros is, anything other than a play off lose to a higher ranked team should be see him removed.
Very small minded attitude. No wonder you can’t appreciate what Kenny is doing.
Look mate. You’re all full up with your rugby and hurling. Football just isnt your thing. I know you want a bit of a chat but it’s probably best if you leave it off. @Breaking_my_balls is playing a blinder here hopping us like sausages with his bizarre conditions for Kenny being regarded as a decent manager. I just cant help myself.
The end of it. He’d had some great days especially after how bad things went under trap, but then it all went bizarrely bad.
Do we need a new thread for Armenia lads? Or will we keep the fight going here for a while yet?
