What are the solutions? Ogbene right wing back maybe? Left side options are weak. O’Dowda possibly?
Farrugia
A sub for Shamrock Rovers. Good option allright.
Is he in the squad?
I don’t think O’Dowda has (m)any defensive instincts and is a flaky enough and regularly injured winger. I don’t see him being a key squad member.
he isnt a sub mate
he will be in the malta squad if spock doesnt pick him soon ffs
Wants to force out the greatest manager in the history of the Pat Grace Famous Fried Chicken League of Ireland in favour of some journeyman from across the channel he read about in the Daily Star
Ogbene’s skill set would be completely wasted at RWB, as it was at Rotherham last season.
In the current Ireland set up, the wing backs tend to be the players who carry the ball into the opposition half. They usually have a striker ahead of them to play it into feet and get wide again for another pass or they have a midfielder inside them that they can slip a ball into and move forward to be in position to attack down the flank. Basically, most of the time they are in the middle of the ‘play’ as opposed to hanging on the edge of it waiting to be released in behind with a pass, which is Ogbene’s strength.
Doherty is good at the role going forward because he carries or moves the ball forward quickly and is a neat passer and gets himself into position well to be an attacking threat after he has given the pass either inside to a midfielder or forward to the feet of one of the front men. Is Ogbene as neat on the ball yet?? Possibly not.
Ogbene is a powerful runner, good in the air and is really good when released in behind. His best position in this current set up is up front.
The question is can you play both him and Obafemi together, as Parrot links the play to midfield quite well. Are Ogbene and Obafemi too similar in playing style/strengths and in particular their weak areas?
jim goodwin isnt a journeyman mate
McLean doesn’t. Doherty shouldn’t. Doherty ran in to so many blind alleys and dead ends the other day it was unreal. The joy we got was when Parrott dropped in and McLean and Doherty stayed deep allowing Obafemi to run into the channels and be hit with balls down the side, Ogbene had joy down the side of their centre halves too when that space was empty. The wing backs are there to get high and wide on the switch, not as ball carriers. When a wing back advances with the ball, he is risking losing it, which fucks you defensively. When a full back like Doherty runs with the ball it just shifts the defenders and midfielders one space across, Doherty is never going to run 50 yards beating 3 players. It kills the space out wide for Obafemi or whoever needs that channel. Best case is a check back inside and recycle, actually slowing the game down. With 3 at the back and 3 in midfield we should always, always be able to beat the press through the middle, we have 6 fucking players there. Then it goes wide, or to Parrott who’s dropped in to the half space
We are beating the press, regularly. We got out fairly well last Saturday night. It’s just that a lot of international team’s set ups mean that the last pass on to “get out” from the back is very often from the midfielder out to the wing back who can advance unchallenged into the opposition half until he meets resistance when he is then usually faced with the 2 options of playing it into the feet of the striker who can offload back to the midfielders or directly inside to a midfielder before pushing on as a crossing option.
I just think Ogbene would be a complete waste in this role to be honest. You want him further up the pitch in my opinion, getting involved later in the play
this illustrates a perfect example of why Kenny isn’t really up to this level. You adjust the role to suit Ogbene then, make him push higher and have one of our 2 defensive midfielders drop in on the cover or for an out ball, he wouldn’t have quit on the recovery for the cross either. To be honest - I don’t like wing backs and I fucking hate three centre halves. Is the team build around Doherty so in your opinion?
What’s our team if we go to four at the back. All players are fully fit
Baz
Doherty Collins Omobanidele O’Shea
Knight Cullen Brady
Browne
Obafemi Ogbene
for me
Bazunu
Doherty Collins Omobamidele Brady
Cullen
Knight Molumby
Ogbene Parrot Obafemi
We’re fucked at left back
That’s why I put O’Shea in as Brady as a defender would worry me. But have Brady on the pitch. O’Shea is top top.
its armenia mate, rovers would beat them
he is a right footed centre back - he wouldn’t do at left full I don’t think, he looks awkward enough left side of a three
Blackburn Rovers?
I think it’s built around the concept or system as opposed to any one player to be honest.
If you recall we played a few games with 3 up top, Ogbene and O’Dowda (I think it was him anyway) played as wingers with Callum Robinson through the centre. It made us very easy to play through when we lost the ball.
3 at the back with 2 wing backs and 3 central midfield players makes it much easier to play out with too if you are concerned about the technical ability of some of your players. Basically upping the options to get out as opposed to relying on accuracy.
You could say it’s designed to mask some of the weaknesses and deficiencies we have
