Shels Crisis

See that they withdrew from the Setanta Cup. It would be a shame to see them go under. Can they survive?

Its a desperate situation they’ve gotten themselves into. Something has to be done to stop the team from folding. It would be awful for Irish football. Can anybody see a way back for them ???

I didnt realise things had got so bad for them. What has happened? I thought they had made a load of cash from the Champions league run a couple of years back?

They didn’t make near as much money as they subsequently spent. A couple of Champions League games and they thought they were Chelsea, buying up the best players from every other team to assemble a superteam. Problem is they have a tiny fanbase and their ratio of income to wages was absolutely ridiculous.

No desire to see them go under but the club (particularly Ollie Byrne) brought this on themselves and they are paying the price.

Why do they have no support?

Compared to Rovers and Bohs who have a huge core support, Shel’s crowds of about 1,000 for each game (even when they were romping leagues) was a bit of a joke.

Agreed they’ve brought it on themselves too. And with Dublin City going under last season it doesn’t say much about football in Ireland.

Thank God for Mick Wallace and Wexford Youths FC.

They’ve never had a proper fan-base really. Bohs have been in Dalymount for years and that was obviously a historic home for Dublin soccer so they’ve had big crowds. Rovers were always the biggest and most successful club in the country so even in their nomadic existence they’ve kept decent crowds together. Shels were from Ringsend originally and moved across the Liffey to the lease at Tolka. They were more of a village club like Pat’s in Inchicore so their small, core support didn’t move with them. All they’ve attracted since are students paying 20 for season tickets and the likes.

What’s the latest on the Thomas Davis dispute?

Is it them doing the protesting or Dublin County Board?
