Were you ruled out if you had won a Munster Championship?
I don’t think you’re allowed to handle the ball, so that may have been a factor in selection. The other factor would appear to be giving lads from middling and very much weaker counties a run out. I imagine there’d also be plenty of lads from stronger counties that would have no interest in it.
It’s fallen a long way since it was played in Croker to a decent crowd.

They bring Joe Mac players plus a few token lads from the bigger counties and smaller counties.
It’s supposedly a fantastic piss up. Easier to get lads to sign up for it when it’s in Scotland than Ireland
Can confirm Mickey Joe Egan (Roscommon) is genuinely is classy hurler. Small-ish in stature but has a rocket of a shot.

You haven’t lived until you’ve come up against a fella you boxed the head off of back as a Minor and both of you in shite over 40s, or even worse, a cunt who never wore a county jersey in his life but has managed to improve the older he’s got, runs Marathons and does Trilogys and can run forever and sees this as his last chance to live out his intercounty dreams. Whereas everyone else is just there for the excuse to get away from the wife and kids and go for pints after and tell the same yarns you’ve been telling for 30 years or so, its this fuckers All Ireland and he’s not gonna stop running for the entire hour or so.
