An actual serious debate on this is taking place on Seoige at the moment.
David Norris, who generally talks some sense, is all for it!
John Waters is against it and he’s a cunt.
Eoghan Harris is pro returning to it surprise, surprise.

I think we should go with Ireland becoming the 51st State.

Our athletes would pick up a few medals but on the whole No

A triumvirate of cunts it would appear
Can anybody articulate a reason for actually rejoining?
Have heard talk of this for a while now. Would imagine ease of travel and doing business with other commonwealth nations would be the main advantage bandied about. Would also imagine the Queen regains some constitutional power like she has in Canada, Australia etc.
shurley it would come down to a referendum??
If the people of ireland wouldnt accept the lisbon treaty, they will never accept a return to the commonwealth??

The House of Commons having equal numbers of men and women.
Wrong, while I’ve no problem with women joining governments but I’d hate to think that they’d push out more abled men for the job due to quotas. At the same time I’d hate to see more abled women being pushed out to keep up the male quota.
It’s a sexist idea to be honest! The best PERSON should get the job.
As someone said, there is absolutely no reason why we should.
Who the fook said that?
Its a good idea in this global village, The Irish identity has been eroded to the point of no return at this stage. We are but a satellite of the UK today.
Have no real problem if we joined the Commonwealth to be honest. . While some southern nationalists (I use that word loosely) seem to have big concerns about it to me the fact that part of the country is still under British rule is a more pressing concern to me than should we join a group that can do fuck all. Not like it’s going to majorly dilute the Irishness of the 26 counties. Can’t get more attached to an empire than still being under its rule can we. Also I have said it before but to me supporting a team in the EPL is a far more practical expression of British influence on Irish society than being a member of the Commonwealth ever would be imo. If you compare ourselves to New Zealand as a member of the Commonwealth I doubt if you went into a pub in Auckland you would hear people come out with expressions like ‘get in there’ ‘have some’ in their Northern English accents like you do in Dublin. Soccer AM has more of an influence on Irish society than Commonwealth membership ever would.
just when I think things have hit rock bottom
Its a pointless organisation, why on earth would we want to join?
for the social status
What is supporting a team in the SPL a practical expression of? Scotland being part of Great Britain and all
I’m not a fan of Irish people coming out with phrases like have some or banter either but its a sign of the times larry. Globalisation is the cause for the dilution of unique cultures worldwide and I wouldnt be surprised if you were in a bar in Auckland that you would hear the same phrases. The majority of Spanish people I know speak English with a yank twang cos its what they hear on TV. The phenomen of Beckham in the Far East etc etc
Finally no, the Republic of Ireland is a free country despite its faults and being part of the Commonwealth is a disgusting concept of accepting an inbred ruler.

Supporting Celic is different to me than supporting an EPL club. Haven’t heard Celtic fans putting on Scottish accents when they support the club as they are comftorbale in the knowledge that supporting Celtic as an Irish person is an expression of their identity. If you don’t understand that check out any of the interviews MON has given on the topic.
Do you consider yourself to be Republic Of Irish or Irish KIB?
Curious is all.
