Significant people's (not celebrities) deaths

Great manager and great character .RIP.

Theodore E. McCarrick, the former archbishop of Washington and the highest American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church to be accused of sexually abusing minors and seminarians — a charge that stripped him of his ministry, his place in the College of Cardinals and his priesthood, reducing him to the status of a layman — died on Friday. He was 94.

Clem Burke certainly in the top 10 of classic rock drummers. Didn’t realise he was so much younger than Harry and Stein.

Former businessman, CEO of Bord Gáis and MEP candidate, John Mullins

He was only Seán Kelly’s running mate in Ireland South (or whatever the constituency is called) last summer, right?

Correct. A young enough man with a great business track record. Very heavily involved in Cork GAA and advising on how to keep the commercial ship afloat after the previous incumbents weighed it down with debt

He was. Given Seán Kelly had munster covered anyway they really needed a leinster candidate to spread the vote. Sean Kelly was canvassing around Cork as well so was always going to be difficult for John Mullins then

Jaysus, I saw him at the Cork match last Sunday.

What I’d heard at the time was this was a profile building exercise and testing waters before the GE. one or other of them mustn’t have fancied the look of it because he didn’t run after

Sean Murphy of Kerry fame has passed away at 93. He was right half back on both the Centenary team of 1984 and the team of the Milennium in 2000. RIP.

Julian Benson. Taken by the monster that is cystic fibrosis, the sufferers of which he campaigned for for many years. He was a great character on the dancing and seemed like a lovely, kind, generous and generally totally awesome man. A Gaeilgóir and a good Coláiste Mhuire man. RIP.

Julian Bensons Room to Improve was excellent and incredibly life affirming. He worked hard to leave a legacy and he succeeded immeasurably. The home he built for patients and the charity he leaves behind will stand the test of time hopefully.

God rest him.

Jesus that’s awful luck

FORMER CROATIAN international footballer Nikola Pokrivac has been killed in a car crash aged 39, the country’s national football federation announced on Saturday.

Local media said he was in a vehicle with three teammates from lower league club NK Vojnic when they were involved in a four-vehicle collision in Karlovac in central Croatia on Friday evening.

His teammates were taken to hospital with serious injuries, while it was reported that a person in another car also died.

Pokrivac — capped 15 times and a member of the squad that reached the Euro 2008 quarter-finals — achieved the Croatian domestic double three times with Dinamo Zagreb. He won the 2010 Austrian title with RB Salzburg.

Pokrivac retired from professional football in 2015 after being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

However, the former Monaco midfielder — who had a daughter — resumed his career in 2021 and joined Vojnic last year.

“Nikola was a great football player, who lived football until his last moment in this world, and who showed great courage in life by overcoming a terrible disease,” said Croatian Football Federation president Marijan Kustic.

“This is a great loss for our football community, and especially painful for the family.”

Julian was a very good dude. I know a few people he represented and he was always a gent and a very decent fella which isnt always the norm in that business. His CF work speaks for itself. RIP

Met Julian at one of the polo days in the Phoenix park where CF had a few fundraisers. I doubt it was his scene but he worked the room cajoling the horsey set to dig deep for the charity. Noel Meades missus, Derville, was a big driver behind it too
