I never knew he had been ā€œde-frockedā€

He called the Brighton bombing ā€œthe night we blew the knickers off the bitchā€

Found out today from the father that Fr Paddy Ryan started the 1951 Co.Final instead of my own grandfather.

Michael Killeen has passed away. He was the owner of Laois Hire and a son of the Galway hurler John Killeen. He’d have been young enough, he sold Laois Hire to HSS in 05 and it was only bought by Briggs in the last few years.

Please God he’s gone to a hire place…

Portlaoise GAA Club are shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden passing of our former sponsor and long time supporter, Michael Killeen, after a brief illness.

Originally from Tynagh in County Galway (Michael’s father John Killeen was a famed Galway hurler who played in the 1953 All-Ireland Hurling Final) the Killeen family moved to Portlaoise in the 1960’s.

Michael established Laois Hire in the early 1990’s which quickly became one of the best hire service providers in the Country, and one of the largest employers in the County. Michael and Laois Hire became sponsors of Portlaoise Senior Hurlers initially, before becoming Club Sponsors for many years.

Michael and his wife Maureen were instrumental in rescuing the Club from financial peril after the crash and indeed, without their generous assistance, the Centre of Excellence at Fr. Browne Avenue would never have come to be.

Our sincere condolences to Michael’s wife, Maureen, his son Michael Jnr., his family (including brother Des, a County Champion hurler with the Club), his friends and colleagues at Laois Hire/HSS Hire. Ar dheis DĆ© go raibh a anam dĆlis.

The death has occurred of
Michael Killeen, Meelick, Portlaoise, Laois on June 16th 2025.

Peacefully surrounded by his loving family. Son of the late John and Christina Killeen.

Beloved husband to Maureen and dearly loved father to Mike.

Cherished grandfather to Max and Seb. Deeply regretted by his loving family. Brothers, sisters, brothers in laws, sisters in law. Nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. Former colleagues in Laois Hire and HSS Hire.

May he rest in peace

Reposing at Keegans Funeral Home, Portlaoise from 6.30 until 8 pm on Wednesday evening, with rosary at 7.30 pm. Funeral arriving at SS Peter and Paul’s Church for 11 am requiem mass on Thursday morning.

I was chatting to my local barman at home a while back and we were talking about my Dad.

ā€˜He won the card game here at Christmas, won the bottle of whiskey, and was dead a few months later’ said the barman.

Another patron pipes up.

ā€˜Jesus - what to fuck did you put in the whiskey?!’
