You’ve played the ball and man there…
Taken onboard ref history questions/ answers etc , he’s lucky in that regard as Irish/ European history especially is his favourite and he loves debating it with me
I raise my kid as I see fit.
I don’t try and raise other people’s kids online. Like you seem to be doing.
You haven’t a fucking clue how to teach someone to pass an exam, don’t be pretending otherwise.
It’s fairly obvious @Corksfinedtboy is an absolutely top Dad, and the interest is there for all to see. He needs to let the kid at it a little bit. If the kid is struggling, he has teachers, if @Corksfinedtboy thinks he is struggling, he can talk to his teachers
What he doesn’t need to do is go to the lad with a load of bullshit suggestions off here.
@Corksfinedtboy - you know your lad better than anyone. You won’t get any advice off anyone here except for possibly one of the teachers
I’ve passed exams, I’ve set exams and I have corrected exams.
You don’t have a growth mindset. You have a fixed mindset. I can help you with that too if you want.
Here’s a tip for free.
Everything in life is a skill that you can get better at with practice and often all a lad needs is a little hack to get better at it with less effort.
For the leaving cert the hack is doing past exam papers is the best way to prepare for a leaving cert exam. A teacher may not say that as clearly as that as education is supposed to be holistic.
Thank you, they’ve done a few past papers and are doing another soon, waiting on Christmas results etc to see where he’s at( pre) it’ll show him where he needs to concentrate on
Just doing them? What if there is a new question?
You know fuck all. Don’t pretend otherwise
Is it 20 years since you sat the leaving?
with all due respect though, @Corksfinedtboy specifically asked for advice, particularly with regards to studying. He clearly stated he didnt study himself so hasnt a clue about study plans etc and asked TFKs advice. Many on here have either studied for the leaving, gone to college or now have kids studying. Its up to @Corksfinedtboy to use the advice how he sees fit and how it applies to his situation.
But this seems to be a little feud between @TheUlteriorMotive and yourself spilling over, none of which is giving any more advice to @Corksfinedtboy
There used to be a rule on here that you needed over 500 points in the leaving to post so he should be in safe hands
If he is worried or looking for study advice. Go and speak to the teachers. He doesn’t have to let the lad know. He won’t get any clarity from this fucking place. The teachers will know the lad and his capabilities and it is their profession.
@Corksfinedtboy won’t be sitting the leaving
He is studying 2 hours a night. To me, that seems more than sufficient and very diligent this time of year.
Sounds to me like @Corksfinedtboy is understandably nervous. Go and speak to the lads teachers and actually find out if you’ve anything to be worried about. They’ll know
I’ve no bake with anybody
@TheUlteriorMotive has a massive ego and lashes out when he is challenged though
If he feels that he is capable of reaching 500 points then he could do with PE with English, Geography, Irish, Maths or chemistry in UL which would typically be around 480 points. There’s PE and Biology in DCU at around 490 and PE with subjects such as English in UCC at a similar points total of 480. He can put those down in any particular order 1, 2 and 3 and then place Arts degrees in any of the Universities of his liking below this as a safety net. 300-340 should get him into Arts and he can choose his favourite subjects. As mentioned already he could also pursue a Business teaching degree with Irish or Religion in Thurles since he seems to be strong in Business Studies. The aforementioned arts degree is for 3 years and he may need to achieve a 2.1 to get into some of the best masters degrees afterward for his 2 year H Dip.
I’m taking all advice gratefully lads, am going to see the career guidance lady, definitely look into grinds, am grateful to all here
you’ve got this.
This is the best thing you can do, nobody here knows your son. I personally don’t think there’s much you can do at this stage, you’ve probably raised him well and taught him the value of education, he sees you working with your hands and maybe he wants something different.
But you can’t make him do it now, your work is done in that regard, talk to his teachers and the guidance counsellor, a lot will depend on the company he keeps as well.
He might get started next year, it might take a few more, encourage but don’t put pressure on him.
And don’t take advice from TFK
Taken onboard thank you
@backinatracksuit has really covered it all above.
Winter/Christmas exams coming up. See how he gets on there and have a chat afterwards.
Grinds are a complete waste of time and money. If teacher and student are doing what they are suppose to, then vast majority don’t need grinds.
I teach Business. If he is looking for resources, I have a tonne. Just send me a PM.
I really appreciate the offer ,good advice, yes will wait see
Pm sent and thank you
Think it was Science\Maths subjects they provided bursaries for mostly. Might be worth @Corksfinedtboy looking to see if anything similar was available in the Free State as I think the bursaries in UK were for UK residents. Although maybe his lad could move up to Derry relations
Here’s some info on UK
https://getintoteaching.education.gov.uk/funding-my-teacher-training/bursaries-and-scholarships-for-teacher-training
Yeah you can apply for some sort of a bursary alright , he’s with me 5 days of 7 normally but it’s his mum will have to apply for all this stuff, thank you for the information
