So I’m officially signed up for an Olympic triathlon now in Limerick at the end of April.
Hoping the overwhelming fear of public embarrassment will motivate me to get my training done much like it did for the Sprint back in September.
I plotted out a big training regime for myself in December. It started well until I met a patch of black ice on my bike a couple of weeks ago and made a mess of my knee. Thankfully it was just a superficial injury and not anything structural. Need to get my bike fixed but I’ll plow on with swimming and running until I get my bike back. Did 8km in the pissing rain, wading through 20m road-wide puddles yesterday. It wasn’t too bad. Hopeful to get to 10km before the end of the month.
The swimming leg doesn’t really worry me. I did 1500m easily enough in December so I know I can do the distance in a 25m pool. As my fitness improves in the next few weeks I’ll need to do the distance in a 50m pool a couple of times to get used to it.
I’m probably most concerned with the cycling. I’ve only really done 30km on the bike up until now. The Olympic bike leg is 40km. It’ll probably grand but I need to get that routine back when the bike is mended.
Then putting it all together becomes the challenge.
Fair play @cluaindiuic looks like you’ve all the bases covered, especially swimming. If you can sign up for swimforamile project, some brilliant coaching going with it, plus you’ll get to do a bit in 50m pool. Melanie Nocher should be taking a clinic or 2, top class. Have a good idea of your 1500 swim time as Joey Hannon is pool based. As for the bike, you can do a lot on stationary gym bikes / turbos / spinning. Just do a weekly 40/50k road spin weekly for a month before the off and you’re sorted, Enjoy
great stuff
best of luck
Cycling is a piece of piss, just get out every Saturday morning for two hours and you’ll be sound.
Bring in a brick session as well midweek and you’ll be flying altogether.
Started back swimming last week, bit stronger than last year when i was pathetic but 30 lengths done (17m pool). Need to get myself to 50 before I’m happy with doing the full club training.
Aim is to do the super sprint for the club in April and will see about the sprint with the swim in the lake during summer.
Don’t be phased by a fifty metre pool feeling much harder than a 25m one. It just does. Expect it, and get used to it.
The main fear in a triathlon is getting your goggles intentionally ripped off by the head of online sales for some mid level business, the LinkedIn type.
PS the bike leg is a doddle.
Depends how fast you want to go.
That is very true.
You’ll lose more on the run than you’ll gain going hard on the bike though.
Well that’s done and dusted. Was a very tough event in pretty nice conditions. Happy to have finished. Time was good, could have been better. I’ll be parking these for a while to focus on hurling. Been tough doing both the last couple of months.
First swim at the forty foot this year today, lovely.
Was there many there, kid? My soul needs to be cleansed by a dip in the sea.
A good few alright, not as busy as it will be in a couple months, was lovely and sunny though so there were plenty about. Very low tide, had to go down the steps to get in and slipped and nearly brained myself on the way in but I righted myself with a steadying hand on the railing and my really good core strength helped a lot I imagine. Be careful of you back Horsey. Summer before last I got out there a lot, was hardly out there at all last summer so gonna make an effort to get out there as often as possible from now on. Was in the water a few times in kilkee at christmas. There’s great peace in it.
A dip in bleach would be closer to what you need
