Played soccer with Oran, Dave used to be on sideline roaring encouragement. A real character, had a serious coaching CV.

I remember him playing.

Went into the sea in West Clare this evening. Only pricking around up our waist, but the current was savage. Water was lovely though, no cold at all. Were told afterwards it was a very dangerous to be going swimming.

Which beach

Doughmore

My favourite beach in Clare, but it’s not safe for swimming.

Waves were savage

You get drifting sand and rip currents there.

Great waves, the surfers love it.

Kid, you need to know what you are doing swimming that beach. Rips are lethal there.

One second up to your waist, next out of your depth as you’ve moved off the sandbar. Then your in the water threadmill. That is when a cool head will save your life

Are you tipping around in the camper van?

Mad bastards s getting in the ocean knowing how polluted it is. I’ll never swim in open waters again… You’d do less harm having a uranium bath.

Ah lads

How many fingers have you now?

Never ever a truer word said. I’ve nearly drowned twice. The first type I was 14 and completely panicked. Tried to swim against the tide, emptied out and was lucky a friend wasn’t far away with board. Second time I was on my own. Exact same thing happened. I had the quick decision to go with the tide and keep a float even if I drifted out. After 2 or 3 minutes I was back on the same ridge and walked in handy. It’s incredibly dangerous at times.

You didn’t bump into jim gavin and co while you were there?
