Test Match Cricket

Ooooft

Just watched the highlights. Blackwood’s knock at the end was a joy to watch.

Englands fielding was a shambles

True of both sides throughout the Test. That six he took Anderson for back over his head off the second delivery with the new ball was ridiculous.

The England declaration at 490-8 looks wrongheaded now

To an extent, but I still don’t think he was wrong to back his bowlers to bowl them out. Would put it on the bowlers and fielding.

Fielding was sub standard on both sides. 13 dropped catches in match and over 400 runs scored by players after they were dropped. Windies should have had England on 40/5 in 2nd innings, England ended up declaring on 490/8. Brathwaite was put down on 4 this morning and ended up scoring 95. Pure conjecture now but If he departed on 4, it could well have heralded the All too familiar Windies batting collapse. Missed catches did balance out as Windies were on top for 13 of the 15 sessions and it would have been a sporting travesty if they didn’t get the win there.

Quite a comeback by Australia, Lyon producing the goods again and they should win comfortably enough now. I really thought this was over when Bangladesh got off to a good start for their second innings and Hazlewood departed injured (he’ll miss the second test with a side strain).
Warner’s great in Australia when he pounds bowlers into submission and can take tests away in the first couple of sessions. Away from home, no where near it and he’s been horrible in the sub-continent generally, so good to see him scoring. Khawaja’s two failures is a cause for serious concern. He should have played in India instead of the bloody Marsh’s.

Khawaja’s big problem is he can’t play against spin. He’ll be relatively untroubled by England in that department.

That’s why they should have played him in India. If he’s going to be a No3 for Australia, they’re going to have to get him up to speed against spin. He was playing well and they dropped him for the fucking Marsh’s, an experiment that’s gone on too long. What’s the point in dropping him because he can’t play spin and then bringing him back to play spin? If he had played in India, he’d be doing a hell of a lot better here. I know it sounds counter intuitive, but you can’t pick and choose what he’s going to play against. He’s a very good batsman and an intelligent bloke who needs more exposure to playing spin.
I’m Moenn Ali will give him problems.

Warner gets his century, 119 left to win, should be straightforward enough with just the two wickets down.

Australia have collapsed from 158/2 to 195/7. 70 more runs needed.

They shouldn’t have dropped Roland-Jones but Broad and Anderson are untouchable

199/8. Maxwell departs first ball after lunch. 66 more runs needed for Australia. Wonder will the injured Hazelwood come out to bat if needed.

Quick runs. 216/8 - Sounds like Lyon and Cummins are just swinging the bat now. Target down to 49.

228/8. 37 needed.

228/9. Lyon out. The injured Hazelwood is seemingly coming out to bat. What heroism.

237/9 - 28 runs needed.

244/9 - 21 runs needed

Australia collapse from 158/2 to 199/8, then 244 all out to lose the first test in Dhaka to Bangladesh by 20 runs. Even by the low bar of this current crop of Australian cricketers, today in Dhaka will be especialy remembered. :grinning: Losing a test to Bangladesh is seemingly as bad as it gets. Humiliated.
