Long tail for India. Chance for the Poms to capitalise

Leach :grimacing::grimacing::grimacing:

Pant gone. England set for a massive lead.

Windies chase down 395 on the 5th day in Bangladesh. Scenes.

Pant is some buachaill all the same. Few great catches for England. Root one in particular. Another day they wouldn’t stick. India had no luck.
Wouldn’t want to bat last on that pitch.
Great toss to win by the looks.

India 144/6 at lunch

179/8 Kohli gone.

England win by 227 runs.

The toss was the winning of the game

Interesting tactic around the declaration by root or lack of. I thought he was actually right not to give the Indians any chance at all of chasing a total. It’s obvious from Australia that they are absolutely comfortable doing that, less so blocking.
Winning the toss was crucial.

Ricky Ponting always set 400+ when declaring. Root probably didn’t trust the spinners not to lose control. Still it was Jimmy Anderson who made the difference.

Can’t quite blame him for that :slightly_smiling_face:

No, but in fairness Leach improved in the second innings.

It was India’s below bar top order batting that was the winning and losing of the test. First innings, India (on what was still a very good Day 3 batting track) put on a derisory 73 for the first 4 wickets. England put on 387 for the first 4 wickets. For the last 6 wickets, England put on 189 and India put on 264 for the last 6 wickets.

If India’s top order had done their job first innings, draw would have been guaranteed and they might even have had a shot at winning. England did only post 178 in their 2nd innings as the wicket started to turn.

90 overs is plenty to bowl out a side on a turning Day 5 wicket in the sub-continent if you have a functioning spinning department. Bess and Leach are no world beaters but between them were a competent enough unit to get the job done.

Root would have been mindful in declaring that Australia got to 334/5 in Sydney in chasing down 407 and successfully chased down 328 at the Gabba. When England were last in Madras in 2008, India successfully chased down 389 for the loss of just 4 wickets.

Difference between 2008 was it wasn’t Monty Panesar bowling against Sehwag

England also had Graeme Swann in 2008. Arguably their greatest ever spinner.

What went under the radar a bit with the Root double century was that Sibley played a dog of an openers innings in posting 87. That gave England the platform.

India 247/3. England had them at 89/3

Would I be right in thinking neither archer nor Anderson are playing?
Presume India won the toss.

A few late wickers for England. 284/6. India won the toss
