That was a great knock from Bethall. Still unbeaten on 142 at stumps. England lead is only 119 so unless he can marshal something fairly special with the tail of Potts and Tongue and another 70/80 runs, England sliding to defeat.

Really highlights the selection folly that Bethall and Tongue had to wait so long to get their chance.

That’s Bethell’s maiden first class century? The flash boy persona is misleading, he seems to be a very intelligent chap and a terrific cricketer. England may have uncovered a gem.

Fitzy jnr was there today with a bunch of mates all dressed in pink.
Smtih walking off from his vantage point.

He was coached by Brian Lara in Barbados. Lara said Bethell was better than him at eleven.

What Mitchell Starc has done in this series has been pretty remarkable. Deserved player of the series.

The last (semi) competive Ashes for a while. The Dad’s Army will get pummeled in English conditions and will be all gone for the next home series

Remarkable series from him, England’s preparations were an absolute shitshow.

Good article here by Emma John comparing the state of cricket in both countries. I can atttest, that while there are challenges, our local cricket club is thriving, both in senior and junior grades.

It was interesting listening to one of the English commentators on the ABC co-commenting with Jason Gillespie and basically doing a job interview with him, asking him what he would change about how English cricket is set up. The jist of Dizzy’s answer was everything, basically.

It was also funny listening to Jim Maxwell and Dizzy doing their regular chat about Dizzy’s 201 not out against Bangladesh in 2006. We learned from this instalment of the series that the real reason he stayed out there was he ran Ponting out earlier in the innings and was scared shitless to go back in the dressing room to face him.

The biggest difference is actually the weather tbh, but dizzy is my favourite ever cricketer. They were mad not appointing him before.

Harry Brook scrapping with a bouncer. Not Officer Class

All the talent and no brains.

The current best side in the world in test cricket, South Africa had no test series over Christmas and New Year for the first time since they were re-admitted post-apartheid in 1992. The New Year test at Newlands, Cape Town was one of the most iconic locked down events in the sporting calendar. Instead they had some T20 franchise big bash in South Africa over Christmas and New Year.

Test cricket is in big trouble. The snokflake, tik-tok instant gratification generation have no time for the slow burner of a 5 day test match. It’s much the same principle really as to how a rapid fire event like darts now has supremacy to a truly great, slow burner of a sport like snooker.

Decent article here.
